'84's are great cars....at least I know of one that is superb.

But I hear you on the learning thing, I'm studying up on '04 GT3's right now....

I had to put GT3 seats in a 78 coupe track car and it was not as easy as one would think. The "wings" around the shoulder area are quite wide and were very close to each other in the middle, and tall.

I like the two cars that Whalebird put up. If you're budget is in the low 20's, then these would leave room for bringing the maintenance up (bearings, brakes, or worst case valve guides) or doing a few upgrades (lights, short shifter). As Ivangene inferred, with older cars, there's always something.

I also am in the same boat with Ivangene in that I wish I had bought a Porsche a long time ago instead of the various cars that I went through. I tell you what driving that 89 coupe was just so cool, so intoxicating. I too will be driving mine every chance i get to make up for lost time...when i get it. Hope it's very soon.

You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a good car.

Now for the update. Guy appears a nice, clean pelican who got the car two years ago from a person in his late 70's who had the car for about 14 years. Clean carfax, all service records available. The work he has dome in the past 2 years is shown in his ad that he ran on pelican just three days ago. He has three people showing interest including one from my neck of the woods.
Here is the ad to show you the work done.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...uards-red.html

He bought it for 18K, spent 3.5K, wantsnohing less than 18K especially given the interest within the first three days of posting the ad. He has sent me 46 pictures.

The flws: Exterior paint blemish which is minor, pssenger side panel resprayed (which I can live with) and the A/C is not working. The only mod is the nardi shifter.

I like the car. I m going to have it PPI'd at Memphis Patwilliamsracing. WOULDWELCOME THouGHTS/COMMeNTS.

The car looks nice in the pictures.

Couple comments:

1. He says the miles are 69,000. That's probably what is showing on the odometer. Given that the car is a grey market car imported from Europe, that means that at some point the speedometer has been changed (the original one that came with the car would be in kilometers only, not US miles). So, unless there is some very good documentation explaining what happened, and when, the miles on the odo should not be treated as accurate. At your PPI mechanic what he thinks of the miles. Do a leakdown and compression.

2. He says the car is all original. In addition to the Nardi ****, that giant Turbo whale tail is NOT original, someone stuck that on later. FYI, a lot of people don't like Turbo tails on SC body cars, it is viewed by many as out of proportion to the SC flares (the Turbo tail was designed for widebody turbo cars).

Thank you491. I'll ask hm about the odometer How easy is the converion of the whaletail back to the stck spoiler. Appox priceI m lookng at ? One mor news. The independan Porsche mechanics (thre are twogod ones) but burnt on out of state PPI's (wouldnt elaborate any further) and refused to do one. I am trying to have my local Porsche tech (who i on a natioal board o porsche techs) influence one of them to reconsider their decision. Heck, I do not even want anything in writing (if they are worried that I may sue them) ....just want someone good to take few hours going over the car and driving it to make sure it's okay before I spend my hard earned money on the car.

I think I am gonna keep an eye out for 88' rear seatbelts for my car... those retractable things take up huge room and the kids complain a little (sitting on the large round part and hard to operate) plus the "covers" get torn up and look bad

Stock the car would come with no spoiler. The optional spoiler for that year would be the "Carrera spoiler." Either way, it's a bit of work to get it back. You need to get either a new/used decklid and grille and get it repainted to match, which isn't always easy on an old red car. Or get a Carrera spoiler and decklid,a and repaint, etc.. I'd count on $600-$1000, depending on what way you want to go.

(You could probably sell the decklid/spoiler that is on the car for $400 or so).

Yeah, some Porsche shops don't do PPIs anymore because the risk to them (of people coming back and claiming problems were missed) outweighs the relatively small amount they make on them (a couple to few hundred). Fortunately, most shops do still do them.
