A tube frame chassis with subwoofer...I don't know where to start.
I would have as much(more) fun in a Beck spyder repro with a 2.0liter+ type 1 VW motor - light and very fast-like sub 5sec 0-60.

Yes, that may be a kit, but it is a serious car.

When the Beck Spyder came out, there was a lot of enthusiasm for them, people were outfitting them with factory hardware, windshields, emblems, etc. I had worked on a turnkey from Beck; I tidied up some of the details overlooked by beck. It had a 2180cc type-1 that was dangerously fast.
I don't keep up with it, but there are some alloy bodied examples being reproduced I understand are superior to the Beck. I think the 906/908 repros are super cool. That's the kit-car my 280hp 3.2 would be if not in a 911.

That's what I was thinking Ed. 904 from Beck, not 908/906. I still don't cozy up to reproductions. They somehow are more acceptable in the form of a Cobra or some other muscle car, at least in my mind. I do like the Cheetah repro and the all stamped-steel Camero/mustang/mopar tubs being offered. The GT40s are so cool...I could have a lot of fun there too.

Yeah, the 906 and 908 are whole different creations.

www.newhistorics.com if anyone cares to see how you can burn 6K hours reproducing a 910 from factory blueprints as something to do when your marriage goes to hell............

The 907K's are only taking a fraction of the time, even though it's been agonizingly slow for my cousin to move these two toward completion.

Most all of the 910s actually running (or the clones built so the owners don't have to use the original car) are using his suspension pieces. I got a call early one Saturday years ago from a Frenchman looking to buy parts. He flew over a couple of weeks later, stuffed his suitcases with parts, took Erik out to a killer dinner in SF, and returned home. He's since bought 2 or 3 cars worth of stuff; we honestly don't know if he's stockpiling or having cars built.

What a tremendous pursuit Ken. I guess I could understand the marriage going to hell statement, but replicating those cars to the n-th degree would seem like a lifetime achievement. Driving a creation like that has got to be a blast. People notice when you back that thing off the trailer. The day I snapped my avitar pic was a practice day at Roebling Roads in GA. They pulled all the cars off the track and let Hurley do some hot laps in the 917, He poured it on pretty good but there is a certain grace about just watching those cars, much less driving them. Hurley said that the car was remarkably easy to drive. What a fun day for me to just see, smell and hear a 917, and I suspect the 910/907 project may bring the same kind of joy to lots of people beyond the owners/drivers.

The vintage 550's have a tube frame vs. the Beck ladder frame. Vintage spyders are, IMO, of a higher build quality. My first 'porsche' or kitcar if you want, was a vintage spyder. It was blazing fast and I didn't know how to drive it properly at the time. They are serious cars. Mine had a 165 hp Jake Raby Type 1. The car weighed less than 1300 lbs. As far as kitcars go, the spyders really are amazing. Not quite like those 910s above, but realistic in price for the average Joe. I especially like when the proper windscreen is installed instead of the bulky looking speedster winshields most cars have.

It's hard to imagine why James Dean didn't survive the wreck.

I've seen a 910 go around Daytona, but I would love to see one in action close up. The 962s were still racing when I was crewing, and I used to love to watch them. Even at the historics nowadays, those things just slither around real fast and quiet.

Both RR3 and the Monterey Historics last year were sensual treats for me, when it came to quantities of prototype P-cars on the track, driven in anger. Most of the owners, or their hired guns, run them pretty hard. I think there were about 15 962/956's at RR3, some driven by the likes of Pat Long. Hearing them come out of the horseshoe at Daytona and shifting up thru the gears, with the turbo noises was pretty impressive. Throw in some 917's, a 917-30, 936, and some other cars, and WOW. Then, there were the 935's...
