That's not an Porsche Outlaw. That's a kit car with a Porsche engine in it.

A true outlaw starts it's life as a Porsche, not fiberglass mold....

And....

if that is not a kit car, why would anyone do that to a real 356?

Not that there is anything wrong with kit cars. They have a purpose and a place, and we all have different taste. You know, different strokes for different folks. Just call them what they are and not by what they are not.

thks, interesting view ....we take a chev small block v-8 & insert it in a p-car (914 or 944) and call it a porsche race car, or we take a wrecked p-car body hack off all the corners add on widebody glass corners and call it a porsche (whether on tube frame or chassis).....
can't argue with your logic.....on the basis that you define a porsche as equal to steel body.

as i said gotta love ratrods......whether you define this as an outlaw or not - heart/soul (engine/running gear/set up /looks) are porsche and better / maybe better than / lighter than factory.....

prefer other term than kitcar, but not a big issue....as perhaps could be pinned to a lot of p-car rebuilds imo

I don't think it fits the definition of Ratrod....those typically are done in primer and either are quite weathered in appearance, or made to look that way. Hotrod would be my name for it.

I think it's pretty cool. There is certainly a place for pristine, unrestored or restored "purist-type" P-cars, just as there is a place for creativity and Hotrods, IMO.

I love rat rods too... but the bad boy American version.
Something intriguing about driving around in a rusty looking piece of metal with a humongous engine up front and two lawn chairs to serve as seats. I find them fascinating.

I am defining it not as a steel body, but as a Porsche that started out as a Porsche at the factory. For example, if you put a Porsche Engine in a VW bus, is it a Porsche? No, it's still considered a VW.

If you take that car to a 356 Registry meet, ahem... Nothing personal but it would be laughed it. If you take that car to a kit car show, they would love it and ask you dozens of questions.

Not wanting to argue either, it's just my point of view.

No matter what we( all of us) think about the car, as you said, love it or hate it, it is about is enjoying what we have. Like I said above: different strokes for different folks.

only trying to start discussion (plus love the clone i clipped earlier).
....and i think we agree on many points.

1st of all ratrod definition (from ratrod universe)
"---We wanted to add a bit of a history lesson to this gallery of pictures and clarify what this "Sick Rides" section is all about. The clinical definition of "Rat Rod" is this..... *A rat rod is considered by purists to be a pre-1949 American vehicle which has been finished to look like it was fabricated by a 1940's hot rod enthusiast. Body paint is usually absent, or at most, primer or flat black finish. There is little or no chrome and the interior is left unfinished.
---Well, this is all fine and dandy if the purist needs to put a label on it, but we know that labels may not always fit. To us "Rat Rods" are the creative expression of the Hot Rod counter culture. Most of us don't really care about a definition, much less putting a label on it. As a result we created these galleries. "SICK RIDES" are the real crazy stuff. Inspired by the cars from the past (regardless of the definition)....these ones really turn our crank shafts!"

SO as our cars age we increasingly face decisions (preservation as in largely underpowered concours) or highly modified and somewhere in between.,,(& i with a WTL cab

so whats ratrod......healey or its neighbour

and whats more appealing/more porsche........our compadre gemballa's

OR in the end this p-car (i call it NOT a kit car, just as i would not call any car on a tube chassis a kit car) imo may contain less glass /plastic and be more a p-car then the overpriced gemballa

we may not all agree so no intent on starting a debate, philosophical discussion on what constitutes an outlaw....imo its counterculture.

Wow, you lost me. I was only commenting on the car, and I thought, in a positive way. I'm too tired to get philosophical about it.

I never considered a Gemballa an Outlaw. I just always thought of them as ugly and not my cup of tea at all, but had friends that just loved them. Thank Goodness we all like different things or this world would be mighty plain vanilla and boring.

Only cars I ever heard called an Outlaw ever in Porsche circles were 356's done hot rod style. I'm not sure who first coined the use of the word Outlaw, but for years Gary and Rod Emory were really considered the very best Outlaw guys, and IMHO they still are the very best. Now many more of the high end 356 shops are creating Outlaws. Heck an Outlaw won the Top Honors at the 2004 East Coast Holiday in Williamsburg. It started it's life as two 356 cabs put together... actually I think he said it took 7 different 356 bodies to put it together. I called it the coming and going car since he used a front hood on the back end so both sides sort of looked the same. It was all steel and built by Lewis at Karrosserie and was pretty cool. It was shown at the Smithsonian too. I'll have to find a picture of it. I think you'd appreciate it also.

PS: We have a Steve Wong chip in our 911. Is Chris related to him?

Aside from the whole gestalt of whether or not one likes this car ( i sort of do -looks like fun), or if it is a true 'rat rod' or 'outlaw', how do you get 280 HP out of a 3.2? - gotta be more than a chip...
