just changed out the fuel tank filter
Greetings to all.
While my babe was in for rear sneakers, I had my wrench chnage out the fuel tank filter with one I got from PP. Although I don't have picks right now, I can say that this removed part was clean as could be!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After 21 years of service! NADA,..nothing within that screen!!!!!! Guys told me that this is always a good sign..............I would imagine it's an often neglected part to change out,...at least after 21 years?
I feel better "knowing".....
Just an FYI to pass on to you all....
Best,
Doyle

After 21 years, I had to look,..and asssume nothing. Part's not expensive.
Maybe others (wrenches) will speak to their experiences as to what they've found within this filter.
If it's called a "filter", I figure I HAD to check it !!!!!!!

When my fuel pump failed I wanted to check mine before I sprung the $$ for the pump.
I took a look in the tank (removed the gauge sender) to see if my in tank filter was the problem.
Mine too was as cleane as a whistle, as was the inside of the tank.
Only problem is that the lower plastic disk on the bottom of my gauge sender fell off and now sits at the bottom of my tank.

Just found this thread!
I took my tank filter out today (about 1/2 hour ago) and it has some "sh$t in the screen but when I put my finger in the tank to feel around the bottom, (no **** comments please) there seems to be about 1/4" of sand or similar in the bottom of the tank
Any ideas on how to flush the tank???

Hi Frank,
We flush/rinse the tank out with clean fuel, but you really must be VERY careful with this procedure.
In some cases, I remove the tank so I can put in some solid media, along with clean fuel, such as steel shot that allows me to shake the tank and knock loose any rust particles before flushing the tank out a few times.

Thanks Steve,
I've got the sender out and was looking through the hole and it seem that the baffled area where the pick up is has a top on it that is held on with some clips.
If that comes off, one would be very sad
The stuff in the tank doesn't look like rust. When it dries it crumbles into a powder. I think it's just dust or 34 years of silt from the fuel.
I'm going to have to take the tank out aren't I????
What part am I being VERY careful about?

Man,...thats one ugly filter. The reddish stuff is rust and not uncommon. Its due mostly to condensation that forms when the car is stored for awhile and underscores how important it is to store ANY car with a very full tank.
Pull the tank and flush it VERY thoroughly with either solvent or gasoline until the eflux comes out nice & clear and you cannot feel any dirt or sand in there. Shake the crap out of it after sealing the openings.

Hey Doyle,
You know how your tank filter was "as clean as could be"?
This is what came out of my tank after 2 flushes each time with about a gallon of fuel.
Filter is in there to give an indication of scale.
I've vacuumed as much out of there as I could, both from the top and from the bottom.
A couple more flushes and I should be good to go

Nicely done!!!!!
Now you understand why some cars experience "running difficulties".
You would never believe what I've seen over the past 35+ years.

MAN!!!!!!!! I had the Wrench change the filter out during a service so I wasn't there during execution. Now, I'm wondering what else (if anything) they checked within the tank. There was much comment on how clean the filter itself wasbut no mention of tank status (did they look? did they feel around?). mmm?
Maybe I'll drop that filter sometime in the future and have a thorough "look" , as you.
I will say that my removed filter (21 years old) looked no different than the installed new one.....it WAS that clean.
Great info, BTW. Thanks for sharing (Steve's input, too).

Doyle
