Default Alarm - Does my 911 have one?

You may recall that I purchased my 84 911 in January when it was bitter cold so now with the somewhat warmer weather I am spending more time tinkering in the garage. While tinkering, I discovered that the car appears to be equipped with an alarm system given the key slot in the inside of the drivers door. According to the manual, anyway, it appears to be the alarm key. Unfortunately, the car didn't come with the key for this.

So, how do I know for sure it has an alarm, and how can I obtain a key for it - or do I need to have the key slot replaced?

Pull the bonnet lever so it releases. Close the car doors and lock the doors. Go release the bonnet lever and lift the bonnet. If you have an alarm it will start sounding with a high pitched sound. Go stick your key in the driver door and turn it to shut the alarm off.

Sounds like you do have an allarm or did have one. The question now becomes is it working.

You can remove the driver's side door panel, then remove the alarm key/switch. Connect the wires, close door. If alarm sounds, then it's working.

You can get a used alarm switch with key from a wrecking yard.

Also, it's not just an alarm. It immobalizes the fuel injection, and therefore disables the motor. It takes a while to disable the system, so it's a pretty good thing to have. I upgraded my alarm horn by shoving two Hella Supertone horns in there with a custom bracket. Very loud, very effective.

One more thing: You can adjust the amount the door opens before the alarm sounds by shimming the door contact switch.

Not sure I have seen the alarm key or slot on the door. Is this different than what I have on my 89? Anyone have a picture?

My alarm activates and deactivates with the ignition key.

Key slot=factory alarm (unless, of course, someone's removed it). There are other alarm components, such as the anti-theft control box in the bonnet

This key is not one you want to misplace and is dedicated to that cylinder (as I understand it).

Is the key slot in the armed position (presently)?

What position is the "armed positon"? I belive it is currently vertical now if that makes sense.

Actually I stand (somewhat) corrected. . . . it isn't perfectly vertical - more like 1 O'Clock/7 O'Clock.

Thanks
