So what activates the blower in the engine compartment? Either of the levers?

This is for an 87 Coupe BTW.

My original post indeed made no sense. I typed it on my iphone.

Those who assumed I was talking about the center vents not bringing in fresh air are correct. I now have the "diagram" printed and I understand.

Engine compartment heater fan blower comes on when either of the red levers between the seats is lifted up...the distribution of the heat is controlled by the bottom red lever on the dash...the rotary fan switch (0, 1 ,2, or 3) between the seats turns on the footwell blowers only when either of the red levers is up...if the red levers are not up, the footwell blowers will not come on regardless of the rotary switch position...when they are on, they boost the output of the engine compartment blower fan...simple, huh?

I asked the same question about my center vents when I got my car because the manual leads you to believe the fresh air blower motor should provide fresh air from the center vents...they forgot to mention that if you have factory a/c that is not true...silly Germans...

Thanks Pavegeno (and everyone else in this thread)! Now it's all clear. My HVAC is completely illogical and working as expected :-)

Flip all the dash controls as far to the right as possible, then dial up the auto heat control between the seats to 12. You'll feel enough heat in about five minutes to defrost the windows and warm the cabin. Then back down all the controls for toasty comfort. Simple as that.

You can also turn on the AC, which will dry out the cabin air.

Then watch the manual controls move by themselves. Its like magic!
