New here, just bought a '70 911
Hey, I'm new here, trying to learn as much as possible. I just bought a 1970 Porsche 911T. The car is black on black with 30k miles and has some tasteful update mods. Not exactly sure what's been done other than the wheels, whale tail, bumpers. I was hoping to learn more about the car here.

cool, hey i'm from LI too.
can anyone tell me what upgrades have been done to this car other than the whale tail? bumpers look newer, etc, same with interior -- but again, not sure. PO didn't know much about the car, didn't even drive it.

i just bought the car, haven't even got it yet. should be coming soon within a week or so. trying to learn as much as possible before hand. i've driven an 86' cabriolet before but not anything like this. how are these little cars? the car has 30k miles and is in overall great condition. i had a ppi done and the carbs need to be rebuilt and the 2nd gear syncro is starting to wear.

the second gear synchro is not uncommon, just drive it carefully for a while pausing between 1st and second and you may get some good use out of it before having to change it . Speed shifting is a no no in any porsche really.
The carbs may be tricky as you have to ballance and tune 6 carbs. Finding a local independant that specializes in older cars may be key to your enjoyment.
Most people rush to change the oil or go to check it and add way to much .
The first thing to learn about a 911 is how to check the oil . Always check it on level ground with the engine running and the car up to temperature.
The second thing to learn is that the oil is held in the crankcase and the oil tank. Both have to be drained when changing.
lots to learn so get yourself wayne dempseys "101 projects" book for starters and then try to get a service manual for your car .. not sure if Bentley makes one for the 70.

I can't tell you what mechanical upgrades have been done to the car, but it was converted from a longhood (pre 74 body style) to the SC/Carrera style body (78+). This was probably done quite a few years ago before the longhood's price started to rise. I'm not sure about the dash top, but that also looks like it was replaced.
Where is your 1st gear? Down and to the left?

If you can make it, there's an event at Huntington Porsche on Saturday. Some guys on this site are going. I hope to be there if my schedule allows.

PS- I agree...DO NOT CHANGE OR ADD OIL UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND THE 911 SYSTEM!!

Not to rain on your parade but I agree with Pete; the value of that car has been severely compromised by the body update. So now you are left with a car that looks like an SC with none of the corrosion protection or powertrain upgrades the newer car offers. Could still be a fun car to drive or basis for a project car provided you didn't pay too much for it. The 30k mi. statement is a huge red flag in my opinion. If incorrect, what else has been misrepresented about the car? Have you pulled the trigger on this car yet? If not please use your due dilligence and good luck with it.
