Well at least it's not overgrown with Kudzu.

Fender side marker lights started in MY 1981 on ROW cars, so might be 80 or older.

No CarFax for pre-17-digit VINs...

Correct. I stay with the 3.0 (1976/77) guess (posted above) because of the radio antenna placement. Antennas on the '78> cars were put higher up on the fender. And it won't be a 3.3 because no one (in their right mind, anyway) would back-date the brakes to the small calipers.

Value? Probably not much, but there is a possibility that, if the car runs, and if the car is sound, and if the car is a pre-production '76 prototype (one that was used in the first Turbo sales brochure lives in Beverly Hills - also a no-sunroof car) it might be worth some coin. That's a lot of ifs!

It has a ten digit VIN, starts with 930 and followed with a pair of 7's.
It has what sure looks like an aluminum intercooler fills the space under the grill in the top of the wing and it has the name PROTOTECH engraved into it.

I found a website that puts the VIN at a 1977 "911 Turbo 3.0 Coupé - VIN#'s between: 930 770 0001 and: 930 770 0695"

Here's another shot of the brakes...can you tell from this if these are the Big Red's?

I would say the car was running when it was parked on the hill with the wheel turned. I wish I could fine a
930 sitting in the woods. Hope your find works out.

states differ on what can be told to tohers based on a license plate or VIN -- ask your state DMV or whatever to give you as much info as they can.

also some states restrict WHO can retrieve information and for what purpose -- in Oregon a licensed private investigator or attorney can get a lot more info than a lay person -- so check out that angle too if you need to

Good Luck - this is a real interesting story

Does anyone have a picture or drawing of the stock engine for a 1977 turbo? Especially a picture of the assembled engine out of the car would be helpful.

If my research is correct the intercooler on this car isn't stock...did the 1977 even have the big air to air inter cooler?. Were the 1977 turbo cars twin turbo's? The wastegates are a pink anodized aluminum color...not sure if that is of any significance or not... I've been peeking under the car with a flashlight and mirror trying to find part numbers etc.

As to finding the owner, I know who it is now but his phone is unlisted so I'm trying to locate a friend of mine who knows him so he can help me contact him about it.

If the car has a Prototech intercooler it will be an EFI conversion with a carrera intake manifold running on Motronics. This, together with the Big Reds and wheels will mean that the its owner has invested some serious coin into the car at one time. This MAY be a screaming deal.

It's obviously had $$$ spent on it. The brake conversion is good because the '77 was the first year with power brakes. Lot's of after market intercoolers out there - don't know the name of this one - that explains the tail.

In the third picture I see steps leading to a the porch of a house about 20 yards away across a driveway or small road in a rural area...

You're on private property, how the h.. does that make it an abandoned car in the woods? and what right do you have snooping around someone's car and putting this on an internet forum?

you're lucky you havn't been shot or beaten up.

I keep a beater turbo at my beach house in SC. The one you're looking at isn't silver is it? I can't see pics on my iPhone.
