Default Quick Forum Poll - G50 - $5000 question

Guys,

I'm building a 1982 SC with 965 motor and have the option to buy:

a: 1987 G50 trans - non LSD FOR $3000

OR

b: 1991 965 G50/52 trans - LSD (of course) FOR $8000

For every 10,000 kms (6000 miles), i'll drive 9500 street and 500 track/ autoX

Should I go with A or B keeping in mind the future value of the two trans.?

Thanks for your input!

Are those the only two options?

I'd keep looking for an LSD box for less, or find out how much it would cost to add LSD to a non-LSD G50.

I would buy the open g-50 and buy my factory lsd for $1500 plus shipping and enjoy a 5 speed that will take the power you put down without having to half your t bar. You can 1/2 moon the tube and enjoy many years of driving. Regards

I don’t think the LSD is worth 5k. Five thousand dollars worth of track time or DE will improve your autocross time more than the LSD. People always want to buy go fast, but the truth is most of go fast is a skill and skills require education, training, time, repetition and practice. A top notch pro driver can take one of the slowest cars in the club and buzz the big boys. For me using up 5k in tires, brakes and maintenance items would be more fun.

Does the $8K tranny have the "short" gearing? That may be one reason for the increased cost.

Great advice! Please keep them coming in!

Jack - are they the only options? no - i did a quick search on ebay and see a G50 6speed from a 993 for a decent buy it now price (i suspect it may not fit) and went to guards transmission to have a look at what they have to offer. No pricing though.

Tsheenan - shameless plug! but a good reference point. Please pm me (or feel free to post) about the details of the factory lsd - year, mileage, % numbers - i haven't looked into costs of re and re on the lsd for g50

Batman - very good point about spending the money where it really counts - on track time and related costs. I forgot to mention that I've only been to a couple of autoX and track events in my 964. I have been to more than a dozen track days on my RZ350 and CBR600(s)...

Cmoss - not sure about the short gearing - i'll take a quick look at the 964 Companion to figure out the gears.

thanks for the comments.

Well, there's a huge difference between the two transmission types. One is the first year of the standard G50, which isn't worth 3K unless it's been recently rebuilt. The other is a Turbo version of G50 with tall gearing (probably too tall for your liking), that still may need some conversion parts to install in your early car. The LSD in the 50/52 isn't of the same caliber as a Motorsports type LSD.

I agree with P2-gears are too tall in later box, hell, that was one of the first things we would change:-) M

Hey there Alex,

I thought that I would share my thoughts with this thread and see what everyone thinks.

Given that you are doing very little track work, I would recommend the G50/01 or G50/02 (short tail) 5 speed gearbox with LSD. I would definantly advice an aftermarket, (guard is the best) LSD as the OEM LSD does not tend to last for long. (Carbon Friction Plates), there are a couple of other options out there as well.

$3000 is a very fair price for a G50 these days. Factor in roughly $2500 more for a quality rebuild though, or you could simply give me a call and I can send one already rebuilt out to you.

The G50/52 is a great gearbox, but unless you are running over 600HP, it is pretty much over kill for most 911 SC applications. These are really tough and pretty difficult to find gearboxes, they have several advantages over the G50/01, but I doubt that even at $8000, you will find one in good condition. These will very typically retail rebuild for well over 10K.

That being said, I would be happy to help you in any way I can if you are still on the hunt for a good option. I am always here to help.

Warmest Regards,
