Well, thanks Chris... I think we all share more than we disagree about. With little opportunity to hammer on other marques & points-of-view via this Rennlist, combined with the emotional linkage of ego & auto, we sometimes hammer on one another. Absent external adversaries, that's a common "family" dynamic. The Porsche family has had its share of differnces too, and seemed to overcome them.

No, get a '68 or earlier - IRS is for wimps!

Kevin,
Maybe this anaology will sum up the entire debate.
928 = F-15 = Long range, high speed air superiority fighter.
911 = F-16 = Highly agile, easy to work on, point defense dog fighter.
In other words Porsche covered all the bases.

So Paul already bought a 928?! Maybe if we paid more attention to original topic we would have noticed! I know he may be biased but I think it's time we heard from Paul... how do you like the 928 so far? Any regrets? Also please keep us posted on your maintanence costs.

Chris,
We can also use women. I think we can all agree on this:
928 = Delta Burke = Very good looking but a bit heavy, high maintenance
911 = Rachel Welch = As good looking today and in 1965, well built, reliable, fun to drive.

911 = Charo, really hot in her prime but now hanging on with a lot high tech of plastic surgery. Still looks pretty good from a distance but can't really cut the mustard any more. Overpriced & unaware of it.
928 = Carol Wayne, knock out body, genius IQ and personality. Died before her time and never did get the popularity she deserved. But anybody who ever saw her is dreaming about going for a ride.

Hello
A short tidbit.
In 1989 the german Sport Auto magazine 95made a comparsion test between a 944 Turbo, a 928 S4 and the then new 930 with 5 speed.
Fastest car on the Nürburgring had been the 928 most entertaining car and fastest feeling the 930. General winner was none maybe the 944 as he offered the nearly same power for the lowest budget.
I think the testdriver was Norbert Haug in those days............. Maybe he could always handle heavy cars better.
Also fastest Nürburgring Porsche Tracktime for a street legal car was the 928 Clubssport ( untill the 959 came... ) Made by one from the Steckkönigs or Stefan Bellof.
Well the 928 is the most understanded car and while Jaguar ( Tom Walkinshaw ) tried everything to make the XJ-C and XJ-S competive Porsche had a winning 928 but maybe not the money or the guts to race that thing. Instead they driftet into the luxory cruiser marked where people also could live with a SOHV and life axle as long the car looked speedy. And even there the 928 wasn´t a hit as the design didn´t followed the fashion ( Ups didn´t we had that with the 911 too ? )
Grüsse
