VIN Decoding / 1985 911 who's the expert?
I have just purchased a 1985 911 carerra cabriolet VIN #WP0EB0918FS170194. It is a wide body/turbo look with whale tail.I was told this is somewhat a rare vehicle. Can anyone tell me if this is so, or where I might go to find out more info. I have been to some of the web sights but cannot figure out the #8 in the VIN, or if the last 4 numbers are the sequential numbers in order of production of that model? Who's the expert? Any help is appreciated. Thanks Gary

I'm no expert, but here it goes from Bruce Anderson's book:
WPO = World producer code
EBO = VDS code
91 = 1st & 2nd digit of Porsche type: 91 = 911
8 = Test Digit
F = Model Year: starting with B = 1981: F = 1985
S = Manufactured location: S = Stuttgart
1 = Third digit of Porshe Type: 1 = 911
7 = Body & Engine code: 7 = Turbo Cabriolet USA & Canada and 911 SC or Carrera Cabriolet USA
0194 = Sequential serial number produced: 194th produced in 1985.

Thank you for the info, does anyone know what the #8 test digit is for?
Of the 1050 cab's, would you know how I would find out how many turbo/look optioned ones were produced?

Garbers... dont quote me on this, but I think its just a "place holder" to make the VIN friendly to US vehicle databases.

Yes it is the wide body/turbo look cab, option (491).
1985, with 60,000 orig. miles. Black, and in excellent condition. This is the style I originally wanted. Unbelieveable handling at high speeds. Great car to drive.

Do you know if the M-491 code is actually listed in the VIN somehow, (one of the digits, notation), or is it just in the option code area in the manual?
Do you have the original copy of your window sticker?

My understanding is that options for models are not included in the VIN#, except identifiers for country destination, model (911, 930 etc.), body style (coupe, Targa, etc.), production number, year, etc. If you have the original Warranty/Maintenance manual, the dealer should have placed a sticker inside the 1st or 2nd page that lists first the VIN#, then then Color Code and after that all the options that came with/on the car. Example is 491 which equals turbo look. There sould also be a sticker under the hood of the car. Thank you for the list. I believe I will have to wait untill the COA arrives from PCNA, as my warranty manual does not list any of the option codes in it. It appears they left it blank.
