It's an '87 coupe with 122k miles, but engine rebuilt at 100k.

Good luck.

I would personally buy the 122k car and save yourself $7-$14k, Especially if you plan to drive it.

I did, and it's at about 138 now and it's been less than a year.

Yep,..you'd better get a great PPI for those garage queen types.... (or doublecheck to see if the ODO has been into..)...careful, careful...very low miles doesn't necc. make it perfect...

..of course, not always true,..but..........................................

I'd prefer a well-inspected "driven" one....I'm with murphyslaw1978 on this one..

Best,

My brother has an '89 cab (which he is NOT selling), he is the original owner and it has 22K on it. It has been dealer-serviced with an open checkbook from Day One, and he has the binder of records to prove it. He does all maintenance based on time, not distance. I would pull it out of his garage tonight and drive it cross-country without a second thought (though he might not like that).

This 'fear of garage queens' thing is pure hogwash, propagated by high-mile owners jealous of the prices that nice low-mile cars command.

Lemme tell ya something: they ALL need SOMETHING when you buy them, but the 100+K mongrel that's been kicked around by multiple owners who wouldn't or couldn't afford to maintain it, is gonna need a lot more 'somethings' than a well-maintained low-mile car from a caring owner.

Agreed, Barry. Any/all of 'em WILL need something and a PPI will reveal. As many have said: these are made to be driven'. Many of the guys on this forum (and others) have noted issues with both old and "less-driven" examples (different issues), so I have to agree with you....maybe you would think the low mile examples wouldn't have any issues related to the fact that they're driven much less...guess what I've read is hogwash........... I do understand your point, however.

In the end, a WELL kept low miler will be fine, as will a well kept (NOT a mongrel) higher miler that's had her rebuild. PPI tells the tell?

Would be curious to see what others will say, especially the guys who work on 'em, day in. day out.

Part of the "maintenance" is driving her. At 25Kmiles on my 89, I'd be averaging ~110 miles per month on her. Somehow, I don't think she'd like that.............not get her fill,..and somehow get back at me!!!!!
I know I wouldn't be getting my fill!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Anywaze,..point taken Barry.

Best,

I guess "maintained" is the key word that keeps coming up, whether it's a "low" or "high" miler. I can see leaks or rubber & plastic deterioration, and maybe some corrosion issues coming up in a garage queen, whereas everything's just starting to wear out in a high mile car. If the engine's been rebuilt, you've still got all those miles on the transmission, suspension, etc. For the record, I consider 100K on these cars to be barely broken in, but the market looks at it differently, because that's about the only metric there is (along with model year) to form some kind of basis for valuation. Beyond that, the value of a good PPI really kicks in, to separate the "mongrels" from the good ones.

I don't really think the weight that the market attaches to mileage for valuation is really fair, but it's the playing field we have to deal with.

I think something to consider is that the 89 has a 5 speed transmission vs the earlier models....
Someone else can confirm this if I am wrong.

Have an '88, ocean blue, grey interior, 55k miles, recent top end rebuild, upgraded AC, upgraded alternator, alpine stereo with amp. Purchased from and maintained by Midwest Peformance Cars. Considering selling to buy an SC I can restore/fiddle with (just can't bring myself to modify this car). Located west side of Chicago. Price range probably near the higher end of your range. Drop me a pm if you're interested.
