Post heater blower stuck on

Hi all,

I'm am a bit stuck at the moment because the fan in my 86 3.2 carrera won't turn itelf off despite the fact that the ignition is off. It is the fan controlled by the rotary *** between the driver and passenger seats. It's my only car and I could do without a flat battery in the morning...

Does anyone know how I can disconnect the fan until I can get it to a garage? I have pulled just about every relay and fuse in the car, but it still seems to keep going. Help?

You should be able to pull the relay out. It is behind the plastic fuse panel cover on the left side of the engine compartnment.

Hi Slomarsh,

I tried pulling the relays (two I think, and three fuses) that are under the plastic cover in the left hand side of the engine bay, but that appeared to have no effect on the running of the fan...

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Actually, I'm lying... The relays in there are the rectangular steel things I suppose? I gave them a tug but they didn't want to come off so rather than snap something, I left them.

Thanks Slomarsh,

It looks like you were right...It appears that one of the relays in the engine bay, on the left is a bit weird and just attempting to take it off and put it on again has sorted the problem. For now... It looks like it could be the cold expanding and contracting the relay and buggering up a contact somewhere so I am expecting a re-run at some point.

Thanks.

Dom

dom-911 you can replace the relay-they do go bad.
Right, it should be the large metal one. May have a screw holding it on top then just pull straight up to unplug it.

Hi,

The fan got stuck on again last night, so I removed the relay until I can get another. The bad news is that it is apparantly £170, which seems to be a liiiitle bit steep seeing as it is a bit of tin and a magnet. It is the slightly smaller of the two relays on the left which makes the fact that it costs that much even more irritating as the larger one is substantially cheaper.

Cheers,

Dom

Dom,

Go get a second opinion on price from another source. That's an unbelievable, even for Porsche, amount for a relay!
