Help! Broken Rear "hood" cable. 1985 911
My new (to me) project. Rear decklid cable is broken and I cannot open to service engine. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thank you all.

try moving th decklid to the left and right a litle . The mechanism is designed so it will open even if the cable snaps if adjusted properly. the cable it too tight it opens , the cable is too loose it opens. My guess is the mechanism was biding or out of adjustment in the firstplace.
I know that doesn't help but working the decklid left to right slightly might release it.

Don't know if this works on a 3.2 but this happened on a C2 turbo I had.
On the C2's you could remove the drivers side tail light and there was a second cable loop for this exact purpose.
Good luck.

Youare not the first to have this happen. Over at Pelican, there is a very good thread on this topic. See it here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showt...ighlight=stuck

Agreed that you should be able to get the lid open with a bit of pressing and shoving then just pull the old cable through and fit a new one - relatively simple. I did the same with my old 964.

Oh crap, been there done that! I read every posting I could find, including those on Pelican. What worked for me was a shot or two of whiskey to fortify and loosen my muscles. Next (oh...this was on my 930) grab the rear deck wing in both arms like a bear hug, and wrench that sucker left and right furiously, while at the same time apply slight upward pressure. Pop...up she came. I've since installed a low-tech coat hanger wire emergency pull that's tucked away between the rear valance and the muffler. Just in case. The 930's (at least my '87) do not have the emergency pull behind the tail light.

Doesnt the cable run through the wheel well? the sheathing can probrobly cut back and the piece in your hand should give a good idea exactly where it broke. This isnt a good ida if the new cables dont come with sheathing obviously

Often the cable does not break. The set screw at the latch gets loose with time, tempeture change, and vibration.
I do not recall. Is the latch exposed when the muffler is removed? Might be another way.
Also, it is good to check that set screw once in a while.

I recently had to adjust mine (1985).
I worried about getting stuck with the lid down while doing adjustment.
What I found is the latch appears to be designed so that the latch does not hold the striker when the cable is loose.
I thought the latch may be worn as the lid was popping up at times. I had to tighten my cable.

I have had occasion for it to stick close in the past. I would pull on release while reaching back to lift lid.
