Default OT: Merry Christmas to me

A new garage mate for the 911 is arriving soon. First it is stopping at a restoration shop for upgraded suspension, brakes, steering, A/C, and last but not least, a supercharger.

Though Porsches are my favorites, I used to race a Shelby GT350, and these old fastbacks bring back a lot of memories.

Wow, that is a beautiful car.... Good that you are upgrading the brakes with the supercharger. What is currently under the hood?

Thanks. Right now it has a plain jane 289. Either we are going to put a Paxton on this engine, or go for a stroked EFI 302/347; whatever, mated to a 5 speed.

It will be getting Wilwood disks all around, and lowered a little, and rack and pinion.

Great car. Even the plain-jane 289 can be fun if the car is light enough. Is the 302 a largely different engine than the 289? Do they weigh the same? What I'm getting at is that Carrol Shelby admitted that his favorite Cobra was the 289 because the 427 was so much heavier and it affected handling. I highly doubt the 302 would be anywhere near as heavy, but even 100 lbs could make a small difference.

I like the idea of the Paxton because you could always restore back to original.

What am I talking about? You were the one who raced, not me

Steve, in 1987 I was out in the countyside in Orange County, VA ( south of Culpeper) and was shown a show room stock Cobra fastback hidden in a barn. I went back in '92 and it was still there. Oh, to be the barn...

Steve: Stay with the 289, the car doesn't have to be faaaast! Back in the day I owned a 1967 Mustang fastback, complete with 390 c.i., 330 hp, 4-speed. I didn't realize when I bought it (fresh out of the Navy and lookin' for a cool car) that a small block might have been a much better handling/stopping car. It was fun, I kept it about a year, sold it and bought my first P-car, a '64 356 SC coupe. The rest is history... That said, boy I wish that I had that car today!!!

Congratulations!

I've been thinking of getting another '60s Mustang myself. Went through a couple of 289s back in the day and a 351w Cougar, which is the same car underneath the skin. Also am reminded the 351w is a better wy to go than a BB because of weight.

We put Boss 302 heads on a 289 once and that might be a fun place to start. You can later swap those onto the stroked 302 or 351w block if you need more than 350hp or so. Of course that was before Edelbrock's kits which make this much easier today.

Anyway, since you were smart enough to choose that car you may aready know all of this.

Merry Christmas!!

look up what www.BBKperformance.com can do for the mustang. It will arrive in my box....not to ***** myself out or anything...Ok, so it's for newer mustangs, but it is still cool stuff.

It WAS different driving a tank - Not to mention my old '69 GT500 drank fuel at the rate of 6 MPG! Nice looking Stang! Congrats
