I'm looking at an 89' Carrera - great car but the present owner indicated the speedometer just stopped working. The car allegedly has 33K miles on it. Little shaky to me. However, he can prove milage in March of 31K via state registration so maybe he's telling it straight -- I tend to believe him. I checked past topics on this board and see several around broken or switched out speedometers. Are broken speedometers a common problem with the Carrera's?
Thanks

Jeff, run the carfax then pop out the spedo and check the date on the back. start with the clock, then tach, then the spedo. the clock comes out easy, the others you really gotta push. The date should be the same as on the wire harness or as on the door jam.

Thanks to all -- very good information. I hope to work out a deal with the present owner and join you on this forum. I know I'll need a lot of help.

I know that the odometers have shown to be failure prone. I have not seen enough data about just the speedometer failing, the speed sensor is more likely to go bad from what I have seen. How may people have been able to just pop out their tach's, without removing items from the steering column? Maybe I wasn't doing something right, but without removing the turn signal switch cover, it would block the tach from just being able to pop it out completely to remove it. There are a lot of verifiable low mileage cars out there, you just have to keep looking and doing the research to make sure if someone is not being totally upfront about the mileage if you suspect that it is "off" a little or a lot.
