Cup holder solution for '86 911
As a daily driver, I needed to solve the flying coffee cup problem. So, last week I built the most over-engineered cup holder you could imagine but it works really well.
Here's what you need:
1. An adjustable cell phone wand (6") with flat mounting plates on top and bottom. These wands/posts are used for installed car phone cradles and are ball in socket and wingnut adjustable. I bet any cell phone shop has a ton of old ones.
2. A fold-up black plastic cup holder from Pep Boys or Auto Palace ($5 or so).
3. A piece of sheet steel which can be formed over your cruise control box and attached using the same screws as the cruise brain.
Here's what you do:
You take out your cruise brain (if you have one) and fashion the steel sheet over the visible half of the box and matches the attachment holes. Now, you take the crafted metal, drill and attach the cell phone wand. Attach the other end of the wand to the plastic cup holder by matching the mounting holes on the wand and drilling through the back panel of the cup holder. Now, fit the formed metal bracket back over the cruise box and attach using the cruise box fasteners. Adjust the wand and you're all set.
I like this solution because I did not have to drill the 911 at all and the cup holder folds away when not in use.
This is how the holder looks:

Chris, sorry to intervene...but I saw your attempt at posting a pic and took it as an opportunity to exercise my recently awarded "Super Powers" and posted the pic for you.
You had everything down packed, except that when you upload your picture, "copy" the link, as you did, but when you return to your post, select the "IMAGE" button on the Instant UBB Code menu, located on the right, below the message block and "paste" the link in there and hit "ok"...you almost had it!
BTW, VERY nice creation you have there...you should market it!??

Jeff,
Thanks for the posting help. So close yet so far away...
Market it? Not likely. I owe much to this unbelievably helpful group of Porsche friends. If the idea or the plan is any good, helping has been my pleasure.

ANother solution: I took the 5$ cup and attached\it to a 5-lb or so square 6in x 6in x1/2in piece of flatstock, with a sandpaper sheet glued to the bottom. Low center of gravity like my boxter engine, take turns real nice!
