Post starter replacement procedure

anyone familier with replacing the starter on a '77 911s? some have said a partial engine drop is necessary, others - no hassle. I'd like to know what I'm looking at before I begin.

I changed the starter on my SC, not too different than your car, and it wasnt that bad. I had the car on a lift, so access was a little easier, but I dont think it would be that bad on the ground either. No engine drop in my case.

Make sure you connect the wires correctly, I switched the smaller ones accidentally on the first go round.

I did my sc in my garage with the back end up on jack stands wasnt bad at all. You just have to reach around the trans, like your giving it a hug, to get to the top bolt. good luck

If the original nuts are still there, the top one holding the starter should take a 10MM allen, making it a little easier to get on/off, at least that's how it was on my SC...believe Porsche did that for years to facilitate easier in/out starter replacement.

You should not have to drop your engine, although lowering it a few inches by removing the large motor mount bolts and supporting the engine with a floorjack will make it easier, but NOT required.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT THE BATTERY BEFORE STARTING!

...or it may be the 4th of July in April! <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" />

Just a note to add to Jeff instructions. Go into the Allen nut and clean it out before you put the 10mm hex or wrench into it.
Use a small flat screwdriver for the cleaning.
Good Luck.........
