turbo look vs aftermarket flares?
Just bought a 1984 turbo look carrera VIN WP0AB0913ES121918. How can you tell if this is a true factory turbo look and not steel flare add ons? Thanks

The factory welded on flairs for Turbo's and Turbo look cars until model year 1986.
JV911 is right, if it's a true factory Turbo look, it'll have option code M491 on the option sticker under the front hood and in the owner's manual.
If neither sticker is present, you can call Porsche Cars North America, give them your VIN and they'll give you the options the car originally was equipped with.

It is correct that you cannot tell by the VIN.
The larger calipers and the location of the rears, they would be about 3 o'clock on the back side towards the engine. Normal 911's they are on the front side of the axle, towards the door. Someone could do the swap, but is unlikely. The turbo look trailing arm is larger.
Check to see if your option sticker is still under the front hood...as mentioned m491 is what you are looking for.
Hopefully you paid a Carrera price for a m491 turbo look and not the other way around.

you can do things like check for undercoat or rock guard on the underlip of the fenderwells. check for a ruff texture on the lip if the fenders. If it is ruff it is most likely factory. the aftermarket companies didn't duplicate that texture. every guy that I have seen check out my car has gone around and checked.

If it's an M491 it should be considerably faster than a standard carrera 
Usually the brakes are give away and the easiest thing to quickly check, if it does have turbo brakes, then check the rest.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I called Porsche Cars North America and they confirmed that it is a turbo look M491. This is my first Porsche and definitely a dream come true. I'll post a picture soon. Thanks again

They feel for the undercoat or rock guard coat by hand, not check for turbo flairs, that they could do with the use of eye *****. The factory fendors have a texture that is unique to the factory. The aftermarket guys have never been able to duplicate. My local frankinporsche chop shop guy that made slant fenders for dealers around the country back in the 80's said he never got that texture quite right.

Here are some quick pics. Thanks again for all the advice. Oh yeah paid $15,100 for it. 144,000 mi no oil leaks, compression and leak down testing good.
