insurance for '87 carrera
howdy.
i originally posted this in the general area, but looks like that space isn't used much, so will try my luck here.
just bought a 911 for the street(photo's to come,) making arrangements to have it shipped. i am familiar with insurance for the track, what to expect from our 944. I have gotten a few collector car insurance quotes from heacock, hagerty, & condon & skelly.
so far i've been a bit under whelmed.......i've submitted a stated value of the car as $35k, that i'll drive 2000 miles per year, about a $250 deductible. I'm getting quotes ranging from $500-850 per year.
also - i'm in rural nj.
are those fair rates? i was expecting sub $300 a year, based on a friend who has a collection of several classic/muscle cars.
please chime in, let me know if you think these are fair, or that I’m missing an angle here.
any assistance is appreciated.

An 87 won't qualify as an antique, etc. in most cases. That's what many places told me about my 84, anyway.
I'm paying around $800-$900 / year for normal street car insurance for my 84, FWIW. My bill's in the 400's for every 6-months here in RI, fire / theft / collision / 100k-300k, $500 deductible.

my '88 cab is less than $1.00 per day. We have four cars. One is listed as wifes primary driver, one is my primary driver and another is my secondary, and the Porsche is listed as my third choice. No restrictions and no high deductable. Stated value of $20,000 'cause that is all I paid.
Your higher quote could be the $35,000 stated value. ...or your zip code ...or record

1) Overall , NJ auto insurance is the most expensive in the us.. or very close to it.
2) 1987 doesn't qualify for collector car in nj.. I think that is 25 years.. so, 1982.
3) You can have "stated value" - ie you say it is work $35K. That would be very high for an '87 unless it is a Turbo. But, you "pay" for what you want. You want coverage for 35K for a car that might only be worth 20K, or a blue book of $12K, you get to pay the difference.
To me, anything UNDER $1000 in NJ is cheap. Irecall my '78 911 cost me around $2k/year for full regular coverage. When I moved to Va, my bill dropped to $600/year.
Also, higher deductible = lower premium. Causing $250 in damage to a 911 is VERY easy. Raise the deductible to $1000 and I bet the premium drops (although not as much as you would like)

thanks guys -
this is helpful, i may be shooting for too low a price for the insurance. the sub $300 number i threw out was for a 25 yr old car, i guess i don't qualify. i also may need to reconsider the stated value. i didn't pay 35.....its just that i've been looking 3 years for this car. it was recommended to me to state the value of the car higher than i paid, based on how hard it was to find exactly what i wanted.
i'll tell you all about it and post pics as soon as i receive it. don't want to jinx it by spilling my guts and giving the details.
thanks for your help, you guys rule.

I've got my 83 SC & 98 Saturn wagon nsured by A.I.G. for stated value (just the SC), $32,814 (it's a gold plated Porsche) - had to provide all the receipts for approval of that figure. No collision on the Saturn, $500 deductible on the SC. Straight forward insurance (not classic/collectible/limited mileage) for $1772 yr. Most of the premium, needless to say, is for the SC - not cheap, but I'm covered for theft and collision for what I had in it when I insured it. The stated value of the SC depreciates annually, of course.

If you totalled your car, I bet you wouldn't collect $35K...they'll be glad to take the $ for the premiums though. If that were the case, then my car is worth $100K, I'm stopping by my ins. agent, updating my policy, and going for a drive . Lower the stated value to something realistic. What's your deductable...bumping it might help also.

Need thoroughly read the policy to be sure about that. I have a similar situation with my 94 Turbo. The collector policies have a very wide range on the value of certain cars based on mileage and condition and handle it differently than your mainstream auto insurance companies. If you are insuring it for a stated figure than that is the agreed value between the insurance company and the insured.

I had Leland on my 82SC starting in 01'. I had a value of 18k and 500.00 deductible and it cost me around 400 a year.

I'm in NJ & have policy for 2,500 miles- agreed value $35K, under $400 for 12 months with Leland West. Great customer service as well!!! Also can get 5,000 mile/year for another $100 or so (I'll have to check to see what the actual extra amount is), but I don't get her out for more than 2,500/year so no need. Also, I'll have to check the deductible- it is either $500 or $1,000 (I know I have $1,000 deductible for our other cars, since I'd only run though a large incident- knock on wood hopefully no need for that though)
Requirements are you need another car for each driver in the household, and a garage as the primary housing for the car

As I posted: "The stated value of the SC depreciates annually, of course."
I stated that mine is NOT a collector/antique policy, which policies generally limit mileage (5000 miles/year is common) have other conditions as well and cost MUCH less than the straight forward policy that I have.
There is a cost difference between "agreed value", wherein the insurer "agrees" to insure your car for a value that THEY determine and "stated value", wherein the insurance co. requires reciepts of work done that they use to decide if they will insure and at the price YOU "state" - and, as I said, that aint cheap.
I put 12k miles/yr or so on my car and chose to bite the bullet and pay. A.I.G. is a huge co. w/good rep, so I'm not particularly concerned about getting what I'm paying for should I have to collect. My agent had to do a bit of searching to find which companies would insure me for what I wanted - not many offer what I have, and none for the price I pay.
What's your deductable...bumping it might help also.
I also stated "$500 deductible on the SC." Without looking at my policy, that may actually be $1000 deductible.
Another factor is where you live. If I lived in L.A. I'd be paying MUCH more for car insurance.
Cheers,
David

My apologies on what I thought I was paying...
I just paid the bill, $217 / 6 months in RI. ACV -$500 ded., $100k/$300k. Progressive, FWIW.
Now, if it ever comes to a point where I need to claim anything, I expect that ACV will be a fight...
