Default 1971 911 S

So there's this little hot dog stand near where I work. A few years ago I noticed the owner had a nice old 911 sitting in a garage attached to the back of the resturaunt. Three weeks ago I asked the guy about the car, and he was very happy to talk about it. Turns out it's a very original very nice non sunroof 71 'S'. It had a respray at some point. But it's a very nice car. He says he's about to put it on eBay. I said "hey you might be surprised what you fetch for it, the long hoods have been on the rise especially the S models."

So the next day I stopped by a local autocross just to watch and I spot a really nice 73 RS replica (I believe), and start talking to the owner. It turns out this guy is really into early 911's. So I tell the guy about the 71 about to go up for sale. He seems interested, we exchange cards. He calls me the next morning looking for more info on the car. I lead him to it.

This past Saturday I stop in for hotdogs and ask about the 911. He tells me the dude picked up the car for $18k I'm leaving names out. For all I know the new owner may be a regular on here. And I'm in no way mad at him. But holy crap, If I had any clue this car could have been had for less than $20k I would have been all over it. I guess ya snooze ya lose. The hotdog stand owner bought an '06 Carrera S Cab. He's happy.

So you didn't think to ask the hotdog vender what he wanted for the 911? You weren't snoozing, you went out to lunch somewhere on the far side of the galaxy.

First thing I would have asked was how much he wanted or was hoping to get for the car. . . even if I wasn't in the market.

Well, the guy had a Eurosport Midwest plate frame on the car, and he's right next door to a body shop that is heavily involved with the local PCA. I figured he was an informed seller.

Ball park on what you think the car was worth? I'm thinking $35-40k minimum.

Maybe $18.5K IS what it was worth? I've seen lots of cars that "look" great but need work. I've seen lots of cars that were interesting only to find swiss cheese underneath or engine/interior "upgrades" that diminish the value of the car, and thus justify the lower price.

Sure, some people are paying ridiculous amounts for "S" VIN#s but the reality is that experienced buyers and sellers aren't trading large sums of money for these cars unless they are in very nice original or restored condition with correct options, MFI, and "numbers".

Then again, some people are still finding exceptional deals...

Almost any solid 69-73 911S is worth 35-50 K right now, nice ones are worth much more.

If anyone's ever heard of Gene's and Judes, this place is a close second. If you haven't heard of it and are ever in Chicago or River Grove specifically, you should try them.

Umm, I know that plate. The mechanic is my mechanic. I also know of the hot dog stand. 2nd to none, I'm not sure, but Top 5 in the US - probably.
