the above rant got me thinking...am I the only guy to buy a 911 to re-live the 1980's? why did you buy yours?
What a broad generalization.... I would definitely look, flash lights and probably wave.

997 launch in 05'. And no worries as I share the passion as well, nothing like the way my 85 growls.

mine was an impulse buy, really. the opportunity presented itself, i researched and found that $10k for a good, unmolested 83 911 was a good price. i thought, well i haven't had one of these before, so let's find out what the fuss is about. obviously, that was a big mistake and now i can't seem to get rid of the car! it follows me to work, the track, home and hides in my garage waiting to pounce on me when i open the garage door!

I've been a car nut as long as I can remember (45 now). My dad used to take me to the Porsche dealer frequently so I could walk amongts the cars and drool. Back then, I set a goal to own a Porsche by the time I turned 40; on my 40th birthday I bought a 2000 Boxster S (because I wanted that mid-engined balance). I traded it for a 2004 40th Anniv 911. The 40th resonated with my 40 year goal and now I wanted a 911. Nice car, but for some reason didn't really "hit the spot" I guess, so I traded it for my ultimate dream Porsche, a 1997 Arena Red Turbo. After owning almost 40 cars to date, this is by far my favorite car.

Still, I wanted to experience an "original" 911, but I'm not really into owning older cars (for various reasons), so I set out find a pristine late 80's 3.2, since they were the last of the originals. A few weeks ago I found an 87 in showroom mint condition (so it doesn't seem like an old car) with only 26K miles on it.

What a fantastic time trip! More than just 20 years for me, all the way back to those trips to the Porsche dealer with my dad!

I have to admit...the "real" 911s are loud and "growlie". I heard one coming around our street corner, WELL before I saw the Grand Prix White 911 crusing by.

Growing up, my father and I used to spend time together, hiking, fishing, bike riding, sailing, etc. - doing all manner of out door activities. However, for a brief time, when I turned 10, Dad became the custodian of a 911 SC. During that time, there was no more hiking, or fishing. Our time was spent taking drives through the canyons. I could tell that he loved it and that the car was something special.

I bought my Porsche a couple of years ago at age 33. I guess those drives, when I was 10, never left me.

Nice^ White Fuchs with polished lips look great on that car.

We have got some great pics in this thread, and some really heart felt reasons why we own what we own. Cool.

Wow, what a thread! For me its been a love affair since I was 16. The very first car I drove with a manual transmission was my neighbors 1970 912. I was hooked. Then there was 3 decades in between knowing I wanted one and finally getting one. When I was married it was alway the wife and kids first so I did without. Well the kids are grown, she left, so the first thing I did was call the bank and got me an equity line; then I grabbed the paper and hunted me down a P-car. She's a 1984 Targa, Guards Red. I love the smell of the interior, the sound of the engine and the looks of a timeless beauty. My only regret is that I didn't buy one sooner.

Looks like the one growling around our street corner, only lovelier--I presume this is the one you dumped $55K total in? Nice!
