Default Battery Maintainer Use On Older Porsches

The Long story, short version: Several years ago, I bought a Porsche battery maintainer (which is apparently made by the same folks that make the BMW battery maintainers) which has a cigarette lighter plug to hook up to the car. I have used it very successfully on my 1992 968 to keep the battery charged, but not overcharged, for up to 6 months at a time. It is super convenient, as you don't have to finagle with anything under the hood; just plug it in to the lighter port, and plug the other end into the wall outlet and your are good to go!

Now the question...has anyone here used a cigarette plug charger maintainer on an older (1983 911SC) Porsche??? Is there any reason to believe this would be a "Bad" thing, or cause any problems? Really don't need to see my SC smoldering in the garage someday!

Experience here is much appreciated!

a couple of points ..

Your cigarette lighter has to be live all the time without ignition for this to work . Not sure if it is on the SC , mine is dead ..
Secondly some Europen lighters ar a CIGAR lighter and are slightly larger, meaning you need a sleeve adapter , again not sure about the SC . All in all a battery is a battery .. can't see t doing any harm in such small currents.

good luck ..

But otherwise, from a battery charging standpoint, it will work without damaging any components. Also, it will charge the battery just fine assuming you have a hot connection.

If that is the case the maintainer will not work , unless the lighter is rewired.

my battery maintainer came with a molex connector, and two adapters, one was a set of clamps wired to the opposite molex conector, the other was two eyelets conected to the opposite molex conector. I fasted the eyelets to my battery and leave the conector outside the carpet. When i want to plug in I just connect the molex , and when i forget and back my car out of the garage , istead of dragging my maintainer with me the molex just pulls out ... idiot proof ... well almost, I have found I can defeat just about any idiot proof system .. without even trying ...
