That car, based on the side-mounted front turn signals, is what is called a Gray (Grey) Market car. That alone can bring with it a host of problems, so the first thing that you must do is verify that documentation for DOT and EPA certification exist. For example, if you live in CA registering the car will require certification by a CA referee station, which requires the car to have EPA certification. If the car has no certification the referee will refer you to a test lab, where the minimum charge to certify the car is about $2400, and can be much more than that. If you live in a different state call your local DMV and ask them about pollution control requirements. (Racing) Yes, the car can be a legitimate Cab, the first were built in '83 and sold as SCs. Also, you have to question somebody who puts "tilt" in an ad for an '84 Carrera, I can't recall ever seeing a 3.2L Carrera with a "tilt" steering wheel. If the car has legitimate certification documents the next step is to arrange for a PPI at a Porsche repair shop. It's far too early to even think about price until you've got more answers.

11/04, my 84 Cab w/ 50k miles was purchased for $19.5K, with some minor things. With the things I've done to the car already & the overall condition, I don't think I'd let her go for less than $18k now IF all other the conditions were in my favor & I was looking to get out.

There is an 85 Coupe down the street at a dealer, 83k miles, they want $23k. Of course, same dealer has an '85 Cutlass Supreme listed for $15,995, so take their asking price with a grain of salt the size of Manhattan.

Good luck!

I got my '85 Non Sunroof Coupe w/ 37,000 miles for $22k. Tip-top shape.
As far as I'm concerned, it as a steal.

I've noticed on the East Coast prices of SC's & Carreras have gone up quite a bit.

Out of 40 carrera's listed for sale in my area, 6 were for under $15,000 and the rest were in the Mid 20's to 30,000.

SC's seem to be averaging 15-18k now

Shop by me has a real nice Black 83 SC Coupe for $23,000 with 115,000 miles on it and I think they sold it.

Just as a sidebar, I had a Euro '85. The local DMV did not like the "ZZZ" vin, but since it had already been titled in another state (NC), they pushed an over ride button and gave me a title. They never looked at the DOT or EPA papers, which I had with me. And the car passed the required $20 emissions test on a rolling dyno with ease. I then sold the car to a friend of mine in a state with tougher licensing laws - they too titled the car without asking for the DOT or EPA papers. It had the Euro sidelights and the Euro rear fog light.

From my own personal experience, I think the whole gray car hassle is is something of a myth in cases where the car already has been titled in the US somewhere. However, I can't extend that opinion to California, where everything about cars seems to be more complicated and more expensive than anywhere else.

All "nice" 911's years 79 to 88 should be above the 20k mark starting now. So anything that seems to be in good condition with PPI checking out under 20k should be considered a deal.

Seriously guys, you need to keep the resale values up.

I have had a couple of Euro cars ("84 and '86) and loved them. They were both cabs. The Ero cars are definitely quicker and more rev happy than their US counterparts. Both were bought with previous US titles and had been in the states since new. I did not have any trouble registering them in AL and then sold them on ebay. Both went out of state and the buyers did not have any trouble in their state (LA and TN)

If the car is what it apears to be (after proper PPI, etc.) the price does not seen bad at all.

I've got an '84 Euro 3.2 Carrera and an '85 Euro 930. Both were brought over by another owner and it was no hassle except for the insurance. The insurance company I use had no ZZZ VINs in their database even though one car had been in Texas for approximately 21 years and the other had been in Massachussetts and Pennsylvania for about 20. Other than that, they were no issue to register in FL. Both are still in euro configuration with H-4s, exhaust, fuel injection, and emissions (no cats, no air pumps). The '84 we purchased for 16,000 and I paid $25,000 for the 930. Both are really great cars, and parts aren't a problem. In fact, I hope to find another couple of the euro 911s.

No affiliation, but here is a high mileage (140K) SC coupe no AC in red, looks good, ASKING 13K.....Those 3.0 motors are pretty bulletproof and if the tub is nice as it appears this could be a nice deal. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showt...hreadid=344574

In the ad, it states "tilt" and I don't think Porsche ever had tilt steering on 911's. Maybe the car rides tilted to one side!
