The Rebuild Begins- PART 2
Thought I'd start a new thread with the latest progress on the project detailed in this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/911-forum/344138-the-rebuild-begins.html
I got the case split today, which was a fairly painless process once you get the almost 40 fasteners holding it together off. It's really kind of a shame that I'm having to go into the case like this, as the main bearings and crank journals looked superb for 130,000 miles to my untrained eye. One of the layshaft bearings does show some wear, so I guess it needed attention, but truthfully don't know how critical that really was/is.
It had crossed my mind that I really didn't HAVE to split the case to do the needed repairs here. But, as I was taking the case apart, I noticed that it really would've been a beyotch to try to remove the connecting rods for refurbishing, new rod bolts and bearings with the crank in the case.
I'll get the connecting rods off soon, so I'll see what those bearings look like. The learning experience continues, stay tuned....

I got one of the head assemblies stripped down yesterday, it wasn't real fun. The rocker shafts are on pretty tight, and working around all of the studs requires caution to avoid busted knuckles. One more to go, and then I need to remove the connecting rods from the crank and I've officially disassembled the engine!!

Just a "heads up". I assume the engine will not be apart for an excessive amount of time. But crank should be stored upright (standing on its end) or suspended (hanging) from its end. The weight of a crank laying flat can actually "warp" over time.

I'd been using 20W/50 blend, both Valvoline DuraBlend and Castrol Syntec. Approx 3500-5000 miles between oil changes, and driving hard, as often as possible at the track. I'll probably stay with another form of blend after the rebuild that isn't typically available on a parts store shelf, or maybe go to a full syn like Redline.
