- that compartment behind the spare wheel - what's it for?, was it designed for a reason and does anyone actually use it?

That's where the factory air conditioning is located on production cars. If you don't have A/C, then it should be empty. some guys have modified their cars and moved their batteries over there (Optima or Odyssey dry cell ones that is). The lower portion of the steering knuckle is also in there so don't put anything in there that will be loose and get caught in the mechanism.

Loaded, do you have A/C in the car? Sounds like you do or someone removes some of it, but not the evaporator and blower assembly. Is there a black blower housing up front by the battery? If so, that would be the front condensor blower assembly that helps cool the freon passing through the system. If you have A/C, there's another condenser under your rear deck lid and an A/C compressor next to oil filler cap? If not, it has probably been partially removed.

I was only laughing because when I first got my car I could not find my battery. I knew it was up front, but was not sure where...thats one of the first places I looked for it.

The brake master cylinder was in there in the early cars. Also seems to be a popular spot for people to hide components who installed ghetto alarm systems in the '80s that I get to trace and rip out cuz the customer's car won't start anymore and/or has a battery drain . . . besides that it's where AC components are stored as mentioned, and you can see part of the steering rack from the top if there's no AC. That's about it.

In early cars, the Webasto heater was also placed there.

Mine's got some coke, some smack, two hand guns and a bunch of cash. I better leave it alone whomever used to own the car probably doesn't want me messing with their stuff.
