A field of mine just bought a new Cayman S and its simply an awesome car. That all changed when I sat in it - im 6'3 and the first thing I thought was - I cant drive this car - too tall!

I'm just over 6' and most people say that I'm tall. But I disagree, since my height has never been a problem or restriction. Ahh, the price you pay for your height! But it's probably worth it, according to shorter people

That's the same with me....at 6'2" and long legs, the mid-engine P-cars are just too small.

That's another thing I like about my SC - good headroom (quite a lot better than my '99' ex-Vette, even) and I'm 5'13.5".

HA. I definitely know how that works. I'm driving my "wife's" jetta to/from work.

I guess it technically fits the definition, but I don't know if I'd refer to 5 miles really as a 'commute'.
I'm the same way - 1.8 miles from my house to work. I have put less than 2500 miles on the jetta in the last 3 years. It takes me to work and back and that is IT.

i started looking around and came to the conclusion that for 45k, i can get an 03 996 or an 02 c4s..both cars are yes older but are more car than the cayman.

but murphy..my wife wants to get the merc r series...55k(ouch)..my 3.2 will hold me over(2years)..then i may be able to get a 05 997..as much as i love air-cooled cars..i have owned a 993,and i would pass over the 993 for an 03 996(at least for today)..after 911 ownership,i just dont feel like getting a cayman and definetly not a third boxster..its enough of those(although great cars,enough)...i cannot justify owning 2 cars for myself,and the edition of the elise is not pratical at all..i will wait a while and continue to enjoy my 20 year old 911..

I side with keeping the raw 911. My buddy has recently picked up a Cayman and I took it out for a ride....seriously sweet but simply not like a 20 year young 911. KEEP IT!!!!!

I also have a very short commute of about 2.5 miles. Besides the fact that I really should be walking or riding a bike, I almost hate driving my '84 3.2 Cab because it barely has a chance to warm up properly in that distance. This, of course, forces me to take a longer way home... usually through the local mountains. I know, it's terrible.

Anyway, with your 5-mile commute, I would keep the 3.2 and buy a real commuter car. I love the Mini Cooper idea. Personally, I have a 1991 Miata that I've owned for about 8 years. I bought it from the first owner with only 30k miles on it for $7k cash when I was leaving my job to return to grad school. After all these years I can't bear to sell it. I've never experienced a single mechanical failure, it's paid for, and it's just way too much fun to sell. Since the Miatas are so common it's easy to forget what great sports cars they are. 30 mpg, the best shifter on earth, reliable, and the top goes down in 5 seconds without getting out of the driver's seat. And, on a short commute, they have moderate power so you can rev it like crazy in three gears and barely break the law. Mine even has a decent trunk when I need to run errands after work. Used examples are easily available. It sounds crazy, but try one. Like my 3.2, it's hard to drive the Miata without grinning from ear to ear.
