I have a 89 911 Cab and have been using it as my daily since I got it in November - essentially retiring my 2005 ML350. I am 6'2" and drive the 911 to work (12 miles in Los Angeles) and never tire of driving it. I would get rid of the ML except I also go camping and need an SUV. In contrast, I never drove my 81 928 as a daily even though it is quite reliable.

whut you talking 'bout Willis ? ;-)

So far I've changed wheels, tires, added an intake, and exhaust on the Cooper. I have an exhaust header coming, software after that. It already has the S suspension. I think Recaros would be a stretch, I have to save some money for the SC's needs after all. First time out in the Cooper bone-stock I got an autocross 'trophy' (fridge magnet), H stock PAX in street tire class surprised me, I hadn't driven on track or autocrossed in 3 years. I must admit though, it's harder to make a Cooper (with performance mods only as opposed to visual tweaks), look 'rice'. ANY Scion right from the factory screams 'RICE RICE BABY' ;-)

oh, I'm 52

It was gorgeous, you just don't see many Loti in white. Still, if I had the money to buy an Exige S, I would have bought the Cayman S I had reserved a waiting list spot for, then changed exhaust and maybe suspension... I still think about getting rid of both current cars and getting a used Cayman S or used 996 but my wallet keeps saying no. Since I am an old fart, I need to throw more at 401k and savings than at cars... the layoff hammer swings wildly at Big Blue these days...

(maybe I should start playing the lottery again)

Let's see, for a "second car" (to a 3.2 Carrera) that's "newer," "fun," and potentially "economical," and since you don't need back seats or a lot of trunk space...

I'd say get a Miata or MX-5 and put the rest of the money in savings.

Joey,

I agree about the roads in WF.
I live off Forestville Rd and enjoy taking the back roads to my borthes house in Youngsville. He has an 89 Carrera and a 73 914 with the motor bored out to 2.4 liters .

I wonder if the Cayman will depreciate like the Boxsters?

hey john,i know i could get flamed for this, but new porsches just dont seem as special as they used to be..the prices are crazy with or without options..i thought about a used 996,but they seem risky and less fun than my 3.2..my wife has an a6 avant, and 99 percent of my work is NOT in nc..i think ALL cars depreciate fast..to buy a base cayman,i am looking at no money down finance for 900 a month..its crazy.its half my mortgage..and less car than my 3.2..its just newer..

If the choice is:

1. Keep the 3.2 Carrera and add an Elise or

2. Sell 3.2 and buy Cayman

The choice is clearly #2!

The Cayman is a great car. But c'mon, the market will crash on this car much like it has on the Boxsters, maybe even more so over time. Right now, you can buy low mile original 01 Boxster S's for $30K, and they were $65K cars. The Cayman will be a great car when they are available used in the low to mid thirties...as a $65K to $70K car, however, it's rediculous.

It becomes more rediculous when you figure that you can own your 3.2 AND buy an Elise and still have plenty of dough left over! The Elise is a wonderful little car, and it is more of a racecar than the Cayman will ever be. Witness how it shreadded the Z06 Vettes and even a couple of GT3s at Solo II Nationals in SS this past year. The combo of a classic 3.2 911 and a little Elise will make your garage truly enviable!

If I was going to spend a large chunk of money on a newer Porsche it will have to be a 996 GT3

If you can't pay cash for it, it's too expensive.
