Default H4 question

I have been reading some of the threads about H4s. Mostly curiosity and trying to learn a little more about my car. My 85 coupe has H4s. Were H4s standard on US 911 coupes (84-86) or is it likely they were added later? If they were standard is there a difference between those and the "Euro H4"?

Are your headlights sealed beam look-a-likes (Hella), or does their lens project (Bosch)? If you have Bosch consider yourself lucky - they are great lights. If you have Hella they are better than original sealed beams, but not as good as Bosch. In either case they were added to the car by a PO.

They are not sealed beam look-a-likes. They are Bosch and I believe they are 55/60w bulbs (I haven't looked for awhile as they are working well) Since they are not standard would it be wise to add relays? After all there are 137K miles on the it with no problems with the steering column switchs. I don't plan to put "hotter" bulbs in.

Upon further review ... I just went out to the parking garage to check ... they are indeed Hella H4's and look like sealed beam. I will check them this weekend to verify. Sorry for the confusion ... I only have two senior moments a year ... they each last about six months.

Kiwi: LOL. I currently have Hella's in my '82, and I wish that I had Bosch. I was hoping for new lamps for Christmas, but I also had a senior moment - I forgot to ask Santa for them!

Still better than the original sealed beams, so count yourself fortunate. I did the Hella H4's on my '68 (wanted to keep the vintage look of the "sugar scoops" as they're sometimes referred to). GREAT improvement over the old sealed beams in both output and beam pattern. I actually felt comfortable driving at night!

That said, I did put the "Euro" H4s (Bosch) on my '84. There are slight differences, but if aimed correctly, I've always found them very similar in night visibility (and I have 55/60w bulbs in both).

Given slight differences in output, I think it's more a question of appearance. Yes, Euro H4s may have a slight edge, but which look do you like?

Either way, a relay kit (on my list of projects) may be the best upgrade for you at this point.

if anyone wants to know, AJ usa still sells the cheapest bosch H4's at 149 with free shipping. And the sucro relay kit is cheap, I think $20.
