Interesting how the airbox mounting stud is sticking up all alone. Every ounce of weight reduction, right?

That alleged $55K "bid" appears to be an in-house shill (zero feedback).

I would love to have one of these, but they are just too pricey for what you (don't) get, IMO.

The Club Sport Carreras are so rare in the US is because they cost the same as a normal Carrera, but had about $2000 worth of equipment deleted to save some weight. Back in '88-89, that didn't seem like a real smart deal, and not many of us took Porsche's bait...one of the early examples of Porsche underestimating the intelligence of it's customer base. But about ten years later when the customer profile DID change, they figured out that we would pay hundreds of dollars for fluff like "aluminum look" painted trim, so perhaps Porsche is smarter than we are, after all.

From what I can glean, 9 to 20 of these cars were sold in the US, and a good one is worth in excess of 100,000.00 Feel free to correct me on this. I am seeing them touted as a viable succesor to the RS.

There were a couple listed last year for aound $45K I was looking at in excellent condition. They sat around for quite awhile. I couldn't justify the increased price over a Carrera.
A lot of dealer hype there. There's a big difference between removing interior bits, accessories and uping the rpm by a few hundred comparted to an RS which had a bigger displacement motor, 30 more h.p., thinner body metal & glass, plastic gas tank, etc.

There were 21 Carrera Club Sports imported to the US in 1988, and 7 in 1989.

IMO there is not enough difference in the Club Sport and the normal Carrera to consider it a viable successor to the RS. It is pretty much a delete option car akin to the 964 RS America, which many people don't consider to be a "real" RS. The only factory performance mods on the Club Sport were a Motronic DME that raises the redline to 6850 RPM and hollow, sodium filled valves. The U.S. cars have the same horsepower power rating (217) as a normal Carrera. They are somewhat quicker than a normal Carrera due to less weight, though.

It is a neat car, and I'd REALLY love to have one, but I don't think they have reached "icon" status....yet. They were built as club racers, but in the U.S., most if not all were sold to collectors, so they have zero competition heritage on a professional level. The Club Sports are rare because they were not a good value for money in their day, so very few were ordered. As I recall, a total of around 340 were built between 1987 and 1989, mostly for Europeans who DID club race them.

With that said, I am in the process of trying to buy a '88 Club Sport as soon as I sell my '61 Impala SS. Here's a pic...the only Gulf Blue one ever made.

jackb911, I agree with your post. I seem to remember reading a while back that the then new 964 RS America's sat around on dealer lots too when they were new. I would suspect the vast majority of new 911 buyers even back then wanted their 911's with all the comfort features of the more 'standard' models.

I was under the belief that the 3.2 used in these CS's were also 'blueprinted' motors with tighter tolerances that probably provided just a bit more output.

These are really cool cars. I'd love to have one, but not at these prices...

I agree, a CS doesn't have much of a differance than a stripped 3.2 which was sold in Europe as a "Base model". No real special stuff, motor is a little tighter, had a few more HP and I think the chip was different. Sport bampners and a limited slip, other than having double digit import numbers, nothing special to set it off from a regular 3.2 at a glance.

The bid is either him or a friend trying to get someone to think "hey someone will spend that much money so it has to be worth it"

With that said, its rarity makes it a unique car to people in the know, but $55K is about half of what I would pay for it if I had a large museum for Porsches and a pile of cash at this point. I don't think the market will bear that price. If it were mine, I would leave it stock, and park it next to my built to the hilt 3.2 that would run circles around it.

On the other hand, the way collector car prices are going, and the way the long hoods have soared in the last few years, and the way 84-89 prices are going up for great cars, this could very well be a great investment car to sit on and drive for fun for 10 years for no other fact than it IS a double digit import from Porsche. Only time will tell.
