Okay, so just to clarify- we've turned this into a 996 bashing thread? I agree with Jack- arguing over opinions is a waste of bandwidth- and like I said, each to his own.

After some more picture surfing - YES. I definately think the 993 is more appealing than the 996. It just retains enough of the classic 911 curves that I love while still looking updated and refined. No matter how fast it goes, she looks like she could fly! I even think that the 993 may be my next purchase. ....need to chew on this some more. Hmmmmm.

True, but with a longhood you want to go back and polish that one little dirt spot or smudge, or with a 930 you want to just jump right back in and drive. With a 996 you want to make sure the a$$hole in the SUV who just pulled in next to you doesn't whack it with his door

(geez, if I didn't know we were talking about early Porsches I'd be blushing pretty bad right about now!!)

IMO, Porsche had an excellent design back in 1964 and refined it to it's peak in 1973 with the RS and longhood RSR. From there it was a gentle decline through the mid '90s as each successive change was made, tacking on bumpers and mirrors and wings that improved safety or performance, but always at the cost of detracting from a perfectly integrated design.
Then the 993 came, a perfect, clean shape again, taking just the right amount of inspiration from the early 911s--windshield angle, hips, headlights, interior--while properly updating everything that has been hacked and band-aided through the prior 20 years.
The 993 design is the ideal end of the 911 line that started in 1964. You can quibble about certain bad angles, but Porsche was putting bad angles on the basic shape from the mid-70s on, and the 993 cleaned up most of those.
