I have always owned late model M series BMW's over the last 5 years. It amazes me everytime I think about how much I love my 86 coupe. The car is almost 21 years old and enjoy it more than any of my previous M series BMW's I owned. Sure there is a huge power difference, but the feel of the 911 can not be replicated. The pure raw feel of the early 911 can not be matched in my opinion. It puts a smile on my face everyday I drive it. I have had my car now for a year without any problems besides a new receiver dryer for the AC and routine manitenance. Oil changes, Valve Adjustments etc. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS CAR.

I've had a few instructors at BMWCCA schools with 911's. Never had a PCA instructor with a Beemer.

oto60: You are fortunate to own a well-cared for '86. They are wonderful cars from bumper to bumper, even an occasional glitch doesn't matter. Continue to enjoy it!

It's not easy to describe. There's the raspy sound of the flat six coming from behind and all around you, but only the sound of rushing air coming from the front. There's the extended range of the motor's revs -- a different note seems to come with every notch on the tach -- and the way the two simple transaxle mounts are able to communicate the feeling of those revs directly up your spine. There's the way the weight of the thing feels in corners -- the go-kart-like steering lets you place the car's mass exactly where you need it -- knife-like precision -- like you're on skis running a perfect slalom. And of course, there's always the light aroma of oil, Swepco, leather and brake pads circulating through the primitive HVAC setup.

They hit it on the head when they said there is no substitute.

I do love my '79 SC more than any car I've ever owned... Although I wish I still had my early Landcruiser for winter.

you're killing me here. My car has been in the shop for 3 weeks now. All I wanted was for the quarter panel to be re-painted - was supposed to take 3 days. I guess the shop is trying but they apparently bargained for more than they knew.

Question: The shop is telling me that the roll bar has to be removed in order to reinstall the back glass (Targa). Is this true?

I ceratinly didn't think so but I know it is tricky to get that back glass in .. in fact someone here just had it done recently and may be able to comment, try a search to find the guys and PM him.

Sorry to rub it in but I gotta go pick up my son, he is at the end of a 10 mile winding country road ...hmmm think I'll take my Porsche.... he he .... !

Despite my name (two P-cars ago), I LOVE my 88 coupe! I drive it more than any "toy" I've ever owned. Since it is a two seater now (cage), I use it unless I'm taking >1 kid somewhere.

I agree i had a back to back ride with my 911 and a friends 95 M3 at last weeks autox both with similiar mods, and although the M3 was faster we both liked the raw feel of the 911.

I just got back from the Pebble Beach Concours. I took my newly purchased '88 911 to stretch it's legs and get more in tune with it. It ran incredible! It even was fun driving across the fairway on Bayonet Golf Course for the Concorso Italiano. I took Highway 1 back home to the LA area. The only time it ran rough was when I got stuck in street traffic in Santa Barbara. Nothing that a high speed highway run wouldn't cure. I really loved the way that the 3.2 pulls at higher revs.

With all due respect to said 911, driving my Boxster S is amazing. The benefits of the latest technology is striking especially in the acceleration, tight handling, drop top and light clutch. I have driven it twice since back from my trip. I am still amazed after 5 years of ownership. I hope to keep this car forever.

If you haven't driven a Boxster, give it a try. I know that it is not the same visceral feel of a solid built 911, but you will not be disappointed by the experience (unless you have a much higher power machine). It's all about momentum with the Boxster.

I have a nice windy road I take as an alternative route to work.

15 mile windy road in the Porsche takes the same amount of time as the 8 mile straight direct route in my VW Jetta Turbo GLI.
