Default Tahoe / N. Nevada Mechanics

Now that I've acquired the car, I need to find a good mechanic in my area. There are plenty of porsche mechanics in the Bay Area (where I bought the car), but I don't know of any up here in the High Country. Anybody else from my area?

I'm down in Stateline, but I'd be willing to go as far as Reno for a good mechanic.

There are a couple of reputable shops in the Sacramento / Rocklin area if you care to drive that far...

Sac is a little far, but I'd consider it. Who do you recommend?

You know, there is a really neat shop located in Reno (I forget the name) but they sell parts and cars, so i assume that they also do service.
While I was in Fallon visiting my folks, the steering column bushing went out on my 84 Carrera.
I was reluctant to drive it back to Los Angeles that way, so i had to find a fix.
Not only did they have the metal bushing in stock, their price was cheaper than Pelican or any other online source.
Real nice guys and a decent collection of vintage Porsche and Ferrari cars to look at in the showroom.
I'll see if I can dig up the name of the place and post it for you.
BTW, tell us a bit more about your car. What year, color, options, condition, etc.
How many miles and a purchase price (if you don't mind telling).
Also where you found it.

I posted this in the targa vs coupe thread, but my car is in the picture to the left.

More pictures:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/cwest/s...7594134858456/

It is a performance oriented rebuilt 74. After the last major service and upgrade, the PO had significant health problems and barely drove the car. It definitely isn't an original, but if it had a 2.7 I wouldn't have considered it. The car is fast and handles extremely well. I'd guess the performance is on par with original RS, if not better.

Body 1974 911 Coupe w/ sunroof + whale tail 116k miles
Engine: 86 3.2 ~60k miles
Transmisson: Closed space 915 w/ LSD (11.135, 18.132, 23.129, 26.126, 29.21 (top gear switched for 162MPH@7000RPM))

Brakes: JFC Front Calipers + slotted rotors
Breinteck rear 4 piston Calipers + crossdrilled rotors

Front Wheels: 7x16
Rear Wheels: 9x16
New Eagle GTs

The suspension was redone with weltmeister components by GD Racing. I haven't taken full inventory of the suspension upgrades, but there is nothing original. I'll try to get some pictures of the suspension work this weekend.

Top end rebuilt and major service 2k miles ago
+ Custom Cam by D. Elgin Cams
+ New Alternator
+ New Fuel Pump
+ Racemaster clutch
+ Mass Flow Sensor (not sure which brand but there is a receipt for $1500)
+ new exhaust

Interior
+ 3 spoke wheel
+ new leather seats
+ new carpets
+ new dash

Exterior
+ repaint (color changed from brown, original color shows in engine bay)
+ All seals replaced

price: $17k.

The owner, who owned a body shop and was a former rally racer, put a lot of thought, effort, and, well, money, into this car. It isn't a show piece RS replica, but I get the performance for a fraction of the price, and no remorse driving it. Details like the 3 spoke wheel really make the car, IMHO.

Anyway, it is kind of an unique car, that's why I'm looking for the right mechanic.

Tahoe_snow,

My mechanic is (Ben) Salerno Motorsports in Rocklin (916) 652-0496
My PO used Frank's Automotive in Sac 916-452-0917
Some SVR PCA members also recommend IPB in Sac 916-453-1465

Depending on what you need done, you might try contacting Jimmy Deering of Mobileworks to see if he will travel to your place - Jimmy seems to get a lot of good reviews. Jimmy Deering <porscheworks@aol.com>

Good luck!

The car doesn't need much done now, but I'd like to start bringing it to somebody for regular service, so I'll have a better idea if I like the mechanic when more significant work needs to be done. I'll try Jimmy Deering, and see what he says, but I'll gladly take any more recommendations.

SportHaus in south Reno. I've known John McClure (owner) for 15 years now, and he is an incredibly nice guy. Service has always been top notch for me. I wouldn't hesitate to take ANY Porsche to his shop.

Ok I'll put SportHaus at the top of my list then. I looked at their website, and it looks pretty impressive. Quite a few porsches for sale as well.

BTW, I'm pretty sure this is the mass flow sensor that is in the car.

Here is a picture of it installed:

Just want to bump up this thread and say I had the car into SportHaus. Seems like the place to take Porches in Northern Nevada. Thanks for the recommendation.
