Default VALVE ADJUSTMENT QUESTION

I am trying to figure out how many hours labor a valve adjustment calls for? I know how to do the valve adjustment on a 911, but I have no time given my schedule. I am trying to make sure that I know what price range I should be expecting to pay for a valve job. Any input appreciated.

Depending on the year of your 911, anywhere from 4 to 8 hours. For my '71, it takes me about 4.5 hours to adjust the valves. On my '91, it took me 8 hours since there were more stuff (tins, exhaust) to remove. I'm pretty sure a pro can do it much faster.

We charged two hours to do an early (pre SC, no A/C) car, and between 3 and 3.5 for '78 - 89 cars. Because an estimate is required we usually quoted 4 hours for the odd car with aftermarket A/C or a smog pump. Of course, at my shop, just a "valve adjustment" was a pretty rare thing. Our typical client was on a minor/major schedule, and the valve adjustment was part of every major. The follow-up 1K service after engine work was done at N/C, and we refused new clients unless we could perform a major service in order to establish a baseline for the car (it's pretty darned hard to diagnose some of the problems unless you're positive that A, B, & C, etc. are set correctly).

My shop here in Tampa quoted 3.5 hours for valve adjustment on an '87 911.

Hey Pete

Sorry But I had to laugh a little at your comment about refusing clients who didn't let you do a service. You reminded me of Seinfelds mechanic who gave him greif about his car all the time :-)

The local Porsche dealer quoted $1100- for a valve adjustment. I knew that quote was absurd, so I asked around...most of the independent shops quoted approx $400-500-

Ice: LOL! I've done some work for Seinfeld - he's OK. My good friend does paint work for him from time to time, he's very picky but that's good.

Jim: That sounds like it's right on the money with today's labor rates. Labor + gaskets + hardware + oil = $425.

Slot: $1100?!? I think that I sold my shop too soon! Hmmmm, I wonder how many '65 - 89 911s are in Bakersfield?
