"Uh - what was the original question on this thread???"
Is it possible to be a gold chain wearing, stuffed shirt, ego-centric jerk 911 owner & is there an appropriate costume available by tomorrow night?

I think what will suffer more is the used 996 market. With the (largely unjustified) reputation for minor reliability issues (RMS, reported motor failures), why would someone spend for a 996 that is out of (or about to be out of) warranty when they can get a perfectly good 300hp brand new Porsche with full warranty? (..not to mention better interior fit and finish. ..and the better handling.)
Also for the record, using my brother as an example, not everybody who drives a new Porsche is a poser, even if they're new the the marque (or even new to sports cars). Some just want excellence in engineering and a high quality sports car.

My experience is 911 owners are VERY knowledgable about their cars and Porsche as a whole - much more than Boxster owners I have met, for example. And that's not a flame on Boxster owners (my dad has one and is a big Porsche fan). The 911 seems to be a special sports car segment, and the buyers typically know what they're after.

Just as I thought...which is why I drive an air-cooled and like women with legs up to here...
Seriously, if you can afford an expensive car, price doesn't matter and if you can't price doesn't matter.
I can't afford any new Porsche, so I have the luxury of sitting back being philosophical.
Personally I think the Cayman is an awful sexy looking car, and will get conquest sales for Porsche

I guess my snobby side found it interesting, once I had done enough research to settle on a '87-'89, that most sellers, even on PCA Mart, list '87-'89 cars with special mention of "G50", for instance, and other features such as A/C, which all '87-'89 911's have. Seems they are either revealing what they don't know is obvious or else tailoring their ads for buyers they don't think know much about the cars. What that says, I'm not sure. OK, now that my dark side is revealed, I have to say that one of the advantages of owning a shiny 911 is that at the Porsche dealer, they take me serious enough to consider me a possible upgrade buyer, and as soon as they get a Cayman S in that sits long enough on the lot to be used for test drives, I'll drive one. I think Porsche has made the best of all worlds available now. What in God's name could be better than a properly executed mid-engined Porsche? Both the rich history of Porsche mid-engined competition cars and experience favor it. More power and commensurate tweaks will make it a real world-beater for the money, IMO, and of course Porsche wouldn't make it so dominant over the 997 right off the bat. The 911 carries has a lot of tradition and sentiment. I defer to the gentleman who drove one already and found it to be no more fun than a Toureg; if I find it so also I will forever stay loyal to the older cars. A Porsche is a matter of soul, not just pocketbook. I love to let my chipped stock 911 idle as I get out and walk to the driveway to check the mailbox, that idle sound sans SSI or Monty still makes my heart rate rise. It vibrates with my bones. A new 997 drove slowly past me in a prking lot, two feet away and I was startled by how boring it sounded.
