think about 15-20 years from now... we will be driving hybrid hydrogen fueled 4 wheeled scooters and will look back fondly on anything with an infernal combustion engine in it...

I am hoping that the Cayman S has a little bit of the unrefined, straining-at-the-lease sensation of the 996 GT3. In that case, I think I'd choose that car.

The entire Porsche line right now, however, is uninteresting to me. From the advent of the Boxter in '97 (which I liked very much), I began to grow concerned about Porsche selling out. I did not like seeing the same HVAC switchgear from my Audi A4 while in my Boxster test drive, for example. I also noticed that the satisfying door handle mechanism of older Porsches (even the 993) was gone in the Boxster. When the 996 came out, it confirmed my fears...shared body panels and interior with an entirely different product line...and Audis and VWs...Porsche had sold out. They arre immensely capable, no doubt, I just don't get the urge to own one. I pride myself on being able to tell cars apart by year with only the smallest details, and the 986 and 987s keeping stuping me in profile.

If that Cayman has a soul like the GT3, though...

actually untill the cayenne, the last cars to use any VW parts were 968/928, even then it was mostly common electrical things like relays and switches, The Cayenne is a complete sell out, almost all the parts have a VW stamping but the motor......that part they figured wouldn't fly, VW builds the entire fitted body, minus powertrain, then the cars are delivered to Porsche

I really must pipe in here since some of you made fun of me buying a little VW Beetle recently. I had to delete that post since it started getting ugly. I drove a 2002 911s and found it to feel heavy. I drove a Cayenne S and found it to be almost exactly like the VW Tourag. I have the funds to have bought either. The best compliment to my "Old" 1982 911sc was the Beetle. It fits nicely next to the Porsche 91sc in the garage and drives simliar to it with the 5 Speed Turbo Sunroof. Kids love it and my gas mileage is good. My vote is forget about the SUV luxury car and go small. I just had a very nice gas guzzling 4Runner as my daily driver. My Opinion... Please don't hang me on the wall again. Best part is that I only have $12,000 in the bug.

Look at it this way, for the cost savings of buying a Cayman over a 911 you could go out and buy a decent 930 as well.

I'd take the Cayman and 930.

If the Cayman S and Carrera S were the same price, I'd take the Cayman. More attractive, mid-engine, smaller, lighter. The 911 has become so non-distinct that I have to get up real close to even tell it's a Porsche. The Cayman is instantly recognizable. Water-cooled 911s look like they were designed in Japan or Detroit to me. And they weigh as much as my 928. The only thing I'd trade my 86 for is a 993. But I do like the new Cayman.

I think Jack O hit it on the head.... for the current mainstream new 911 buyer, price is probably a secondary issue... they are making a luxury purchase... I'd guess they are more likely to push prices up with options or migrate to the "S" line than down.

IMHO, the Caymen will really steal more sales from the used late model 911 buyer, who can get a brand new car for the same price as a used one.

Also, the "S" is the top of the line, so the mainstream Caymans will be much cheaper than the 911... totally different market IMHO.

Cayman is a very neat car.... personally I applaud Porsche for expanding their product line.... more Porsche are better than less Porsches .....

Personally I'm jazzed about the Cayman. I'd run out and buy one today if I didn't know buyers lining up at the dealers will happily pay sticker ++ for them. Good for Porsche, bad for cheapskates like me. Guess I'll have to tough it out in the 993 for a few more years.

I was #1 on the Foreign Cars Europa (Greensboro NC) Cayman waiting list. I sent them the deposit, and was going to buy what (to me) would be the ideal Porsche. Modern conveniences and comfort, mid-engine handling, light (for the modern era) and stiff, and more stowage space than a Boxster. The problem though, is I work for a major IT company, who lays people off more than runway models change dresses. While I have 32 years and have secured the 'old style' pension, I don't trust the company to pay me that pension. I don't trust them any more than I can pick up and throw a Cayman. I realized it was time to start pulling in the belt and I could not justify a $60,000 car. I decided it was time to prepare for the inevitable point where they finally decide they don't want me, or I reach a point where I simply can't take the bullsh*t any more. I'm selling (or trading if necessary) a very nice 2004 Saab Aero (the 'normal' car) for a far less expensive (i.e. monthly payment) , fuel-thrifty but fun to drive commuter car, a base model Mini Cooper. Not even the Cooper S, I don't need the horsepower or blower whine .... it will meet my needs for modern convenience, affordability, good fuel mileage, and a car that I don't see at every stoplight (I HATE Japanese cars and their Anime-looking styling, every damned one of them, especially that butt-ugly RX8). But having had a 996 C4S while addicted to the track habit and let it go, I could not get Porsche out of my blood, so this summer I got my Cayman deposit back and set out in search of a special air-cooled 911. I love this SC, perhaps more fun to drive than any car I've ever had, and I haven't even gotten it near an autocross or the track. It likely won't see the track because it's cosmetically too nice, but I love it's raw character. Regarding classic 911s, I certainly now 'get it'.

I was reading Autocar (a UK magazine) a couple of weeks ago. They had a full review of the Cayman S. The author of the article called it the non-911 911, the 911 for the air-cooled guys.
A big Porsche fan himself he had always found the new 911s to be a strep furhter away from the original concept... He loved the Cayman as a real modern interpretation of what the 1st 911 represented.

He believed that the Cayman will steal very few customers form the 911. The target audience for the new model is completely different...

Oh... there are also more and more rumors about a CS or RS version...
