Question Feedback on purchasing 1985 911 Carrera

The owner is asking $20K CAD. The p-car is a mint metalic garnet red 1985 Carerra and has 220000Km on it. Two owners, all records, well maintained. Runs very well with no visible rust or oil leaks.

Thoughts?

Thx in advance,
ThePointman

Too much for a high miles car. It does appears to be in good shape. Getting a leak down and compression check are essential. I bought my good shape 84 with 105k miles for $11k two years ago. I wouldn't give him over $15k.

For our U.S.A. viewers, it looks like the car has the equivalent of 136,702 miles and the owner is asking about $16,989 (US Dollars).

I think that is just bit much for the car unless it is flawless and needs nothing major (but they ALL need something). It could be a good starting point for the seller however. Location has a lot to do with pricing, and your location might dictate that these early 3.2's might bring that much.

Looks like a pretty car in the pics and I've seen cars with half the mileage look twice as bad. Sport seats are cool and while the pics are not great, the interior looks especially good for it's age and mileage.

I agree with Michael above that if the car runs and drives very well, get a PPI and go from there on the pricing. It just might be an O.K. deal depending on the car's condition. If it's got fresh brakes and tires, recent clutch replacement, freshened 915 tranny, recent 15k mile (24,000 km?) service, recent shocks & bushings and ice cold A/C, that's worth a bit.

Good Luck,

Jay

I'd say $16K might be a bit high, but if the car needs nothing, and you really like it, I wouldn;t quibble about $1-2K... generally folks figure on about $2K of maintenance and repair on a newlyu purchased car, so If you are confident that litle is needed, you can put some of that into purchase price.

Also this is a very rare color combo with sport seats... if that really matters to you, paying a bit more to get somethinhg that really trips your trigger is worth it vs "settling" for something just a save a few bucks.... you will be keeping any car you buy for a long time... so IMHO shop for the car you want and pay the price rather than shopping for the price ...

This may or may not be that car, but the "wow factor" is definately part of the fun of these cars

OK, I have had the car checked, it has had a complete tranny rebuild in the last two years, has good brakes and 15K on the tires, recent clutch replacement, freshened 915 tranny. The H4 headlight upgrade and the euro chip have also been added. and does not leak a drop of oil.

The current owner has proof of all maintenance. I am paying an extra $300 to have a 15k mile service (may not need this yet however I am trying to start off on the right foot)

The only thing that I will miss is the non functional A/C. I will attempt to fix this. What is it with the A/C on these cars? Every car that I have looked at the A/C doesn't work.

Pretty car, especially the color.

$ 17K(US) is too much with those miles, $ 13-14 K more like it. Matybe $14K with the tranny and clutch work.

Is the AC not working or is it incompetent?. Incompetent is normal and doesn't require fixing.

Trans rebuild is $2-3K, and a clutch will probably soak you $1K by the time the dust settles... alot of cars in the mileage range are staring at one the other or both.... so that's definately a plus. If the motor is solid, most of the other things you could get hit with are not suicide inducing...

The A/C in these cars sucks IMHO... some guys will argue that it works fine.... and there are upgrades that will run you $2-3K.... personally I would just write it off, and not worry about it... you won't really need it in BC....

Good luck

I had an 85 factory turbo look that needed nothing that I sold for $14,500 a year ago. Had beautiful black paint, new tires and rims, new 600.00 radio with 100,900 miles. Considering the major work that has gone into the car you're looking into I would think $13,000-14,000 would be a fair offer.
Good hunting

Are you guys sure this car is not worth $20 K cdn.?
In Toronto it would be. You can't get jack here for under $20K.
I bought my 86 4 years ago for $22. it has spoilers and sunroof which this one doesn't but not Sport Seats. It had 230,000 km. Very good body other than the stone chips up front. Excellent interior, and only needed a rear wheel bearing.
If this car was checked out properly, I think it's a good deal.

I cannot believe that you sold a factory TL with just 100K miles and in such great shape for only $14,500!! Even worse, I wished I didn't miss out on that deal!! And even in a preferred color...man, that's a $20,000 car AT LEAST out here in NJ.

It seems most of the CA and southern states guys say this car is worth under $15k. As you move north and east in the country, the value goes up. I think this car might bring $15k or even $16k here in WI if all checks out and if one holds out for a good buyer that knows the value of a nice 3.2 coupe. Geography seems to play an important role in resale values...

I purchased my 84 just over a year ago for (dare I say it!?) just under $12K. It had 100K on it, but no service records. I have put money into it, but not anything significant.
Is 85 supposed to have the G50, or was that new for 86? (My mind is rambling on again, because I think it is 86)
Anyway, this seems to be a bit too much for SoCal, but it might be a bulls-eye for the location.
BTW, I wish mine had sport seats, but I would not want to trade my sunroof.
The color looks very close to my "Ruby Metallic". Is there a paint code # somewhere?
I wonder if US cars had different names for the same colors as ROW vehicles?

The G-50 Transmission on 3.2 Carrera's arrived for the 1987 model year. 1986 911's still had the 915. However, the '86 model year cars had larger dash vents, updated switch gear and other minor improvements over the 1985 cars.
