Question Might buy '77 911S Targa???

Now I was looking into buying an early 911 for a couple years now,i do not have too much money to spend. I recently found one, a beat up 1977 Targa 911S.
I could only look at it from the other side of a fence for now.
The left rear end was hit a little, the back engine lid is sligtly bent (more than slightly), the paint (brown) is GONE...the color is matte brown now. The interior seats torn up. To add to it I had a look under the engine and seen oil drips coming down. I believe I seen 125,000 miles on the ODO.
He wants $7,000 CDN for it?

Could someone please lead me into the right direction?

Thanks
Tom

Save your money and your sanity and wait for a clean example. I bought mine 3+ years ago and she had a 3.2 installed & done the right way but need a paint job and alot of the normal items a 25 year old car needed to drive the way it was meant to be driven. I paid 10,000 for her and have put another 8+ thousand in her and she was in good shape (3k for paint). Alot of the money was for upgades and polished 7" Fuchs, Tires, sport seats, ect..... and is now for sale @ 14,000 OBO.
It would be wise to by the best example you can afford and save on alot of frustration and $$$$$

Default i see what you mean..

I heard a lot of this.."buy a more expensive car....a p-car you can afford" but that is the thing I do not have much money to spend that is the most I can afford.
One thing that worries me is the engine. How much would it cost to replace the tensioners into carrera ones?

Could anybody tell me what are the major defects of a regular 2.7S engine? What would need a lot of attention.

The body damage I can live with, since I would be doing some of the body work myself, but mechanical I need help with.

All the comments are welcome.

Thanks again
Tom

Tom... just my opinion sight unseen, but I would say the car you describe is worth about MINUS $7,000 CDN. In near concours condition that car is worth probably $14,000 US, and you would easily spend $10,000 to get it there unless there is an engine problem in which case you will spend $20,000.

My guess is you are looking for a decent "driver".... e.g. a car with a solid body, sound mechanicals, decent (if worn) interior and ok paint with maybe some chips cracks and fading...

The cheapest you could possibly find for a 75-77 2.7 is $8-10K US... you could probably find a SC driver for $10-12K US... just get a thorough PPI and be patient... if the car isn't right... walk... if you can't live with the car in its current condition...walk.

Thing is, if you buy a 911 that needs work you can pour thousands of dollars into them and still not have a decent car... no matter how bad you want a car, a 911 "that just needs some work" can be a real nightmare... if you can't swing a good one, do yourself a favor and either save some more, or get a different car that you can get for less money

Sorry, just reality IMHO

Good luck

Default thanks JCP911S

You are pretty much on the money on what car I am looking for. I will still have to go and take a closer look at it,but I will try to use my mind than my heart more to make a decision.

Thank You again

Tom.

U betcha... take the time to really look, and good cars will turn up... no problem dating alot of girls before you get married.... shopping can be just as much fun as buying.

Be patient and keep your eyes opened...hold out for something good...you'll find your car eventually.

Tom,

Look at 'dogs' as well as maybe's - it's the way to learn your way around 911s. The 2.7 is not the best engine manufactured by Porsche and can cost many bucks to put into shape - anything over 100,000 miles is probably in need of some TLC. Look look and look some more - even go see those you can't afford.

Good hunting.
