Default Jack options...

I was replacing the "struts" that hold the hood up on my '84 Targa and noticed that I don't have a jack. I believe it's supposed to be just in front of the spare tire, correct?

I've searched several of the sponsor websites to see about purchasing another, but no luck.

I've searched the forums as well and couldn't find any other threads discussing this.... Do all of you carry the OEM jack or are there other alternatives? I can't search eBay from work, but I'll check there tonight... any other suggestions for buying one?

I'm mainly concerned about needing it for a flat while I'm driving... not for use at home when working on the car.

Thanks in advance!

The original jack is feeble at best - a hazard at worst. My car shows evidence of a nasty on the rocker due to the jack & it was missing when I bought the car (heaved into the bushes maybe?). I bought one with a toolkit from a Pelican just to 'keep it original' from their Parts Classified. Post a WTB here on Rennlist or Pelican & somebody will have one to sell.

For emergency use though, the jack pad & a scissors jack would be much safer.

Thanks Ian! I'm not too concerned about keeping it original at this point... if it were an older one, perhaps. Sounds like the jack pad and scissor jack is the way to go. Appreciate it!

The OE jack is downright dangerous, IMHO. Thus, I don't even carry one (oooh, weight savings ), and would prefer to wait for AAA to change the tire if need be ...not to mention the number of people each year that get hurt/killed on the side of the road by idiot drivers.

You can buy a small floor jack at PEP Boys/Sears etc. These come in a small plastic case and are both handy strong and dirt cheap and will easily fit in the front of your trunk. You will need a jack pad. This slips into the jack reciever on the car and just about anybody with Porsche parts sells them. It is a steel bar with a round pad welded to it.

Hint... put the hjackpad in sideways with the round pad sitting vertically. If you try to jack the car on the flat side of the pad the jack will slip off.

Sell it to a concours person and put a 944 or Boxster scissors jack in there; you can even mod the top a bit to fit your car better.

I'd suggest the 944 scissors jack. It's aluminum, quite light and does the job for emergency lifting. A steel scissors jack weighs more, if that's a concern.
