Post Crashed my 911 at Laguna Seca

After a great weekend, I put my car into the wall after the exit from Turn 9.

I wasn't hurt, which is the good news. I've put a quick description, pictures and video of what happened up on a web page at the following link.

<a href="http://bender.annenberg.edu/pelican/JackOlsen/Laguna_Seca_Crash_11-10-02.html" target="_blank">The info.</a>

I'm going to work out in the next couple of days what (if anything) can be done to save the car.

Ack. Glad to hear you're ok. Sorry to hear about/see the car. Hope it's repairable. I guess you can weigh in on the insurance debate now.

Jack - sorry to hear about the crash. The car looks fixable based on the pictures. I was at Laguna for the first time a week ago and could never quite figure out that turn (even at much slower speeds).

Makes me wana cry. Glad your not hurt dood. The car doesnt really look that bad for hitting the wall at 90. I'm guessing an experienced shop can pull it back pretty damn close to spec. And now that you've bent the car once you might as well go whole-hog and strip it right out and make it more race car than street. I dunno.. just trying to put a positive spin on a very sad situation. GL!

I'm the guy who started the latest insurance question, that video makes me a bit ill...

I've admired your ride since getting involved in the 911 family, I'm really sorry man.

On the insurance question - Jack was racing and no commerical insurance carrier I am aware of covers racing. Many companies do cover on track excursions as long as it is in an educational format - meaning no timing, no racing, no competition, learning oriented with instructors.

Jack, I am sorry to see and hear about your car but was very glad to see that you were relatively unscathed.

As for the car, it looks like you just folded no-structural sheet metal but you will have to get her up on a frame machine and see if she got bent out of shape. If it did get bent out of shape you just found your new race car. Seeing you put your car in the wall make me hesitant about really pushing my pride and joy and reinforces my desire to get a track car. But that will have to wait for the time and the dollars. . .

Well, the best of luck to you. If you need help with the insurance issue let me know, I am an attorney who dealt with coverage issues for a few years and may be able to steer you in the right direction as far as how to make a claim.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Unhappy

I am glad you are all right. It is very unfortunate about your truly fine ride. It reminds us of the risk we assume when we take our cars on the track. For ZCAT, several of my friends have racing insurance which is quite pricy. It allows a number of track days, and your rates are based on the number of days and the value of the car. I'm not sure whether Conseco still has coverage, but check:

Conseco Risk Management. 1-800-678-0361 Ask for Jo Ann Hurst

Thanks everyone. I'll keep you posted on the car's repairability. As to insurance, I have track insurance for DE events. But this was a timed event, so I'll be writing the checks myself. It's a risk I always knew I was driving with, though, so I've socked some money away for this eventuality.

Now, if I can only get the numbers to add up to include a cage and some fiberglass -- and maybe a HANS device...

Jack,

Thank God you're okay.

Looks like you almost saved it.

I encountered a similar, but now seeing your mishap, much less serious incident at Watkins Glen with TracQuest on 10/27. My tires hadn't heated up (brand new Michelin Sport Cups), and although I approached the off-camber left hander at a very reasonable speed, the fronts locked-up and I went straight off and ended up against the armco on the right side of the car.

I was actually able to drive home (very carefully). I'm now contemplating a couple of upgrades, including adding steel flares and going with a C2 turbo front end, rockers, etc.

Keep us posted on your progress. Good luck.

Jack,

I'm so sorry to hear of your lose. Black beauty is my favorite Porsche of all time. I hope she's fixable.

You know, I always have difficulty with that turn on GT2 Playstation.

Seriously though, your car has always been a favorite of mine and hope to see it back soon. Good thing the impact wasn't head on. It does look like the chassis flexed enough that the windshield came out. Keep us posted.

Jack:

I love that you actually track that car. I was making my wife view your mods on your site this weekend. Definately one of the best 911's I have ever seen. Keep us posted.

Ouch! Best of luck to getting the car back together...

Watching the video really makes you realize how quickly the bad stuff can happen.
