Default 1988 911

Guys,

Need some assistance on the value of, and specifics to look for on a 1988 with 28k miles. Car is claimed to be one owner in "as new" condition. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott

Scott: Is the car a coupe, Cab., or Targa? Turbo-look?

Scott: My primary resource in these matters is Sports Car Market Magazine (aka SCM). If you're not familiar, they track nationwide/worldwide sales, auctions, private transactions, etc. They publish a German car price guide every quarter, and the copy on my desk is for March '05. They peg the '88 (one heckuva car, by the way!) between $21,500 and 24,500. They state "The values reflect a retail buying & selling range for cars in very good to excellent condition - significantly above a "daily driver" and one step below regional concours, and have "no stories attached." I think, personally, if all is as represented, you may have stumbled on a pretty special car, but that doesn't diminish the importance of a PPI. The low mileage puts the car in a niche category, and it just might be worth slightly more than SCM's quoted range. I trust that all receipts are available, and the mileage on those receipts track logically with the car's mileage.

The car's location is important too and will affect values to some degree. If the car was perfect mechanically and ready for concours competitions, it might even fetch $30k or above. But, it would have to be exceptional.

As Pete & Curt said. Somewhere mid-20s. Although low mileage examples can sell higher as tdg indicated. Be aware however, that low mileage cars can have problems too. Usually the tires are old & hard. Some of the rubber hoses might need help too. And I know of one Rennlister who bought a 17K miles 87 that had a broken head stud due to corrosion thru lack of use.

Get a PPI as always. Good luck.

Here are some wholesale auction numbers on 88 911 coupes:

09/23/2004 GTR TMPA $ 17,000 65,450 miles WHITE
11/06/2003 MANHEIM $ 19,900 71,643 miles RED
03/11/2004 MANHEIM $ 29,300 28,215 miles BLUE
06/03/2004 MANHEIM $ 21,600 56,843 miles BLACK
07/29/2004 MANHEIM $ 27,500 22,403 miles BLACK
07/21/2004 SEATTLE $ 16,300 73,407 miles RED

That is why I guessed a little higher assuming retail ot private party.

been my experience that the wholesale auctions bring more than it would in the regular retail market...sometimes...at the Manhiem auctions (Manhiem PA and FL) since a lot of dealers sneak in their retail customers then the auctioneer works them over...

...As others posted, so many factors are not accounted for here to get a fair price, need the details!

are you referring to a 1998 or 1988? you originally reference 1998 but all of the responses reference a 1988 model.

According to Bruce Anderson, low mileage can add up to 10% to a 911's value.

Thanks for all of the responses, really appreciate!!! Yes, the car is an '88. The car appears to be one of the special ones. The fellow tells me that the car could show and win. Surprisingly nice when I phoned. Said just take my time and let him know anything I needed. Owns an early '80 cab himself. Expressed the importance of the G50, and went on and on about the car.

Will keep everyone posted.

Thanks again,
Scott
