1988 911

WOW!!! You guys are great. So, sounds like all is checking out ok, except I need an independent PPI? Based on the data on Ian's website (what I used to come up with my offer) and hope the car is as good as advertised, does the installation of the aftermarket steering wheel, exhaust, and incorrect size wheels, keep this car from fetching $30k?
This will be my fourth Porsche. Had a '99 911 (long story), '00 911, and this summer got my wife an Anniversary Boxster 550. I had to get into a four-door sedan for work, and really want a 911 for weekends.
Thanks.

BTW have you seen the coupe at Holt? 1988 Coupe 80K More miles but great condition & original. Still premium dollars though.

Are there exceptions to these rules? Definitely. It could very well be that this is a great car. In fact, it could be that this is a good opportunity for you to get a great car and use the things we've pointed out against the seller to lower the price. You might get a great deal!
BUT, it all starts with an independent PPI at a shop of YOUR choice, not theirs.
No PPI, no deal. I'd be more inclined to buy an 80,000 mile no-stories car than a 30,000 mile car with a questionable background.
Thanks for the nice comments on the '87 guys. I love her!

If you need a local PPI
Scott,
I live about 15 miles from Hatch and Sons. I actually stopped there last year when I was driving by and saw their Porsches outside. I believe that the one you are considering was there then also. That was July-August timeframe. As far as a PPI Iwould recommend Bill Pfister at http://www.eurotechracecars.com/. He is located in Framingham which is less than 10 miles from Sudbury where the car is located. Bill has worked on my Porsches and he is a very good mechanic and a really great guy. I hope to be using Bill for a PPI of my own sometime soon. There is also EPE http://www.epe.com/ in Framingham. Jerry Pellegrino is a highly regarded Porsche Specialist in these parts though I have not personally used him. Does anyone know of any good 87-89 Targa's out there (no white, no red)???? Beyond that I could drive by there for you and look at the car but that is about all. They have a very nice silver targa for sale but it has a red interior. Good luck, let me know if I can be of any further help and folks let me know of any great 87-89 targa's out there!!!! - Dennis

It would also be good to know if the dealer has cash wrapped up in the car, or if the car is on consignment. If it's on consignment it may be harder to negotiate, but would be easier to get records from the owner.

I still think some of these 'boutique' type shops will hold on to their price in hopes of selling their expensive inventory to people that just won't question the cars like we enthusiasts do. There are people out there that have the money and will just buy these cars on impulse for the asking price.

I would do this before the PPI.
The car's been there a long time. Don't rush. If you miss it, it wasn't meant to be. Porsche made a lot of them!
Sorry guys, I've polluted this thread enough!

FWIW: Out here in SLC, I just saw in the local paper an '88 Targa, with 27,xxx miles (can't remember exactly). The car is a one owner (stayed in the family). All records, no mods, etc., black on black. The car lived it's life in Las Vegas, was always garaged and was brought to SLC by son. Don't know much more and have not seen the car, however I did speak with him. Everything is perfect according to son. He wants $28K for the car, however I'll bet you could get it for $25K. He was simply not interested in Porsches. Remember Vegas is a very dry climate.

Dennis,
I can get it for you tonight when I get home. The ad was in the Salt Lake Tribune last Friday, Saturday and Sunday, under sports cars for sale. I just looked in the on-line version and the ad was not there.
