Post Magnecor Wires.

For an '87 Carrera, I would like to replace my spark plug wires. Does anyone have a recommendation for Magnecor wires and where to get them? Thank you. Dan

I believe you can source them directly from Magnecor, if you want. Their website is <a href="http://www.magnecor.com." target="_blank">www.magnecor.com.</a>

I'm still hoping that one day they'll provide a set for our 964's - I'd be the first in line if they did.

Now I have a 86 coupe (N/A). Are the magnecor the wires of choice for the 3.2's? I am new to the 911 world and value any opinions. Thanks

well RJ, it depends.. some guys swear by the stock wires.. and some guys swear by Magnecor.. so do a search and draw your own conclusions.. if you decide on stock, find out how to properly test them with a meter, which usually diagnoses a problem.. but not always........Ron

I installed a set of Magnecor 8.5mm KV85 Competition wires in my '86 Carrera last fall and have been very happy with the result. You can purchase from Pelican Parts for $159.00 + shipping. I called Magnecor to see if there were any dealers in my area. They referred me to a local distributor. He got me my set for even a better price ($110.00). I happened to catch him when he was doing a large re-order and he simply threw in my request with his order and made only a couple of bucks off me plus saved me shipping costs.

I just ordered a set for my 87 Carrera from <a href="http://www.apexperformance.net" target="_blank">http://www.apexperformance.net</a> - the cost was about $105 (the best price I found). I have these wires on my 930 and have been told by all the top tuners I know (Steve at Rennsport, Stephen at Imagine Auto) and by my mechanic that these are a nice upgrade. The one thing to be aware of is that the wires are a bit thicker than the OEM versions so the plastic wires guides need to be expanded a bit to hold the Magnecors.

I purchased from Pelican for $159 and at first was disappointed that they would not fit in the stock wire guides [thicker]. Someone on the Pelican Parts BBS advised I could just drill the guides, which I did. They are fine now and I am glad I put them in. Just so you know . . .

If you do a search on Rennlist for Magnecor, you'll see there have been many discussion on this topic. There is also a thread that talks you through the drilling out of the guides. I removed all the guides, put them in a vice and drill them out with a 5/16" bit (I believe it was a 5/16"), then I used some 150 grit sand paper to smooth the edges and replaced the guides. It worked like a charm!

Sorry for the cross post, but I posted the following on the Pelican board. Can anyone give me some advice?

When does one need to replace spark wires?

I did some research on the board and saw a message were Warren (Early_S_Man) wrote that OEM Beru plug wires should have a resistance of either 3000 Ohm or 4000 Ohm with a 10% tolerance. I measured my plug wires today using a $5 "harbor fright" Ohm meter and got measurements between 980 and 1109. I guess that means I should get new plug wires since they are out of tolerance.

How would a lower resistance affect engine/spark plug performance? Would new magnecors make a big difference? Car runs decently right now but could use a tune up and at $110 for Magnecors, I am willing to give them a try.

neilk, the Beru connectors are the items that should test at 3000 ohms resistance. Much more than that and they are bad (too much resistance). I replaced my originals on my 88 Carrera with magnecores at 100,000 mi and they work great.

I am not positive on this as it's been about 3 years since my electronics class. But it has to do with the not very much studied series circuit theories. The theory is this, in a series circuit, you voltage is variable depending on load and amperes are constant. I believe (this is where i am a little hazy) that variability on the voltage is less load more voltage, more load less voltage. Therefore by having certain amount of resistance in the wires will concentrate more voltage to your spark. Too much resistance results in arching, not enough results in rfi and emi problems i believe. GL

BTW-I am using a set of magnecor wires on my 944 with an msd coil, and am very pleased with them.

Has anyone noticed a real increase in power, smoothness etc. when switching from old oem wires to magnecore? My SC plug wires are the wire braided OEM types, not sure how old. There is a little arcing from a couple wires, but hardly a light show. Trying to decide if its worth just going ahead & replacing them for 100 bucks. The thing is that often when plug wires are replaced, other tune-up items are done at the same time (plugs, cap & rotor, timing, valve adjustment etc) which would seem to make it hard to quantify any improvement?
