Need some math help!
Hi guys, Math was never my best subject and I'm trying to figure out how far a full tank will get me seeing as my fuel gauge is kaput. Here's the deal... I filled her up last week and since then I went 173 "miles" before I filled her up again today. I was able to put in 61 "litres" on top of what was already there. I believe I have a 21 "gallon" tank.
Anyone care to figure out how far a full tank should get me until empty?
I'd never run the tank to near empty but I'd just like to know my limit for peace of mind. I'll have to get the gauge looked at soon.
Thanks!
Nix

61 litre = 61/4.55 = 13.41 gallon
You've done 173 miles on 13.41 gallon = 12.9 miles per gallon (seems low)
on this consumption basis you can travel 270.92 miles on a 21 gallon tank
Hope this helps

Thanks for the info! I guess that does seem a little low. What's average for these cars? I believe I'm running a little rich as I failed my emissions test with too high CO (Carbon Monoxide), meaning too much gas in the mix. Can I adjust this myself or is it something a shop has to do? Is it a pricey shop adjustment?
Thanks again,
Nix

I get about 20-21 mpg, depending on where I was driving (but usually city/country-side type driving, not highway or rush-hour). I drive it moderately hard (which simply translates to "Porsche-normal").
Easy way to get your mpg:
1) fully fill your tank everytime.
2) Zero your trip-odometer (or write mileage down) everytime.
Then, at every successive fill-up, just divide your mileage traveled since the previous fill-up (173) by the gallons bought to fill-up your tank that day... and don't forget to re-zero your trip-odometer for the next fill-up/calculation.

Your fuel tank sender is probably bad. It's easy to test and replace. I forget which pins on the sender but I think the resistance varies between approximately 5 and 75 ohms depending on the how full the tank is.
Part # of the sender is 901 741 801 00. Replace the gasket at the same time; part # 477 919 133.
I think the tank is 22 gallons.

3.8 liters equals a US gallon. If you used 61 liters, 61/3.8=16.05 gallons. 173 miles/16 gallons = 10.8 miles per gallon. 10.8*21 = 226.8 mile per tank. I don't believe you are only getting 10 mile per gallon. Around 20 is more like it. Recheck usage!

Well... I filled up like I said. I reset the odo. I drove 190 miles before the warning light came on. I then drove to the gas station and checked my odo, it said 195 miles. I was able to put in 63 litres! That's 16.5 gallons. I am getting some pretty awful milage.

I have to believe that type of consumption is bad for your engine, accelerated engine wear from washing down the cylinders with gas. Check and see if your oil smells somewhat like gas.

Ok, it seems as though there are 2 types of gallons. US gallons and GB gallons. There's 3.78 litres in one US gallon and 4.54 litres in one GB gallon. I've been told that my year of 911 has a 21 gallon tank. So which 21 gallon tank do I have? US or GB?

...... doesn't matter since you know how much fuel (in liters) you used to go a know distance. Imperial gallon is wacky! I'll put my money on you having a 21 US gal tank
