Rebuilding an '83 SC - The Gold Plated Porsche
My wife picked up a copy of "The Gold Plated Porsche ...." as a present for me after seeing the review in Car and Driver this month. Yes, I'm impressed that she looks at C&D, but I recommend the book to the list. The subtitle is something like "or how to sink a small fortune in a used car", so I thought this might be just a tale about buying a crappy car. But it is more zen and the art of upgrading old pcars - a frequent theme of this board and the listserv.
It's a great read for pcar guys, wannabe mechanics and rebuilders. He's preparing the car for the track and talks about DEs, 911 handling, and other subjects dear to us. It's funny and self-deprecating and you'll see yourself in a lot of his foibles in rebuilding his SC from the ground up. His writing style reminds me of Frank DeFord, the SI author, NPR commentator, etc.
Note to fellow Targa owners -- the author considers Targa buyers in the 80s as the worst example of frivolous Prosche buyers, "poseurs", and that's why there are so many of them on the market.
Leslie got mine from Amazon -- don't know if it's in the major stores yet.
Cheers

Drifting
Greetings from the 993 board! I have read this book and am about 20 pages from the end. I can't wait to get home tonight...it really is a good read and if you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up!

Yeah, I don't get the anti-Targa sentiment. Even among non-pcar types, people assume that you didn't know what you were doing or made a mistake buying a Targa because "they all leak."
For me it was a very purposeful choice. I wanted an open car, but wanted the safety and trackability of the integrated roll bar. I admit that coupes have the best lines, so you do have to give up something. But Targas are classics. Does anybody speak ill of Ferrari targas (or other makes)?
