Default Too much oil 911SC

Hi Guys,
I accidentally over filled the oil on my 911.
1. Do I drain the excess oil? or
2. Will it burn off and leak out, down to the required level?

Much appreciated.
Regards
Chris

You absolutely need to drain back to the proper level. Overfilling is just as bad as under filling.

what is overfilled ? are we talking half a quart ? completely over the dipstick? Before offering any addice having the proper information is important.

What shows on the dipstick when you are idling with the engine warm ?

Once it's established that you overfilled by say, more than a half-quart, and you don't have a suction device to suck the oil out of the tank, the easiest place to drain is the engine sump. There will be the least amount of oil in the sump after the engine is turned off. You will probably still end up draining more than you want, but at least you won't get a huge rush of oil like you would if you drained the tank.

yup this is exactly what i was going to post once i found out how much it was overfilled by.. do NOT take the plug out of the oil tank thinking you can drain a little ... this is the one and only time i can say " ask me how i know" lol

i did it in winter and got a winter jacket sleeve full of 20W50 and is the worst feeling in history lol.

last time i did sump i think it was around 2 litres.

Thanks Guys,
Much appreciated.
My idea was, start up, oil pressure, shut down, remove and drain the oil filter. Repeat a few times.
Will this work, or would the oil filter drain back into the engine, immediately after shut down?
Thanks again.

you don't get much out of the oil filter, could take you all day and it will make a mess out o fyour car since its mounted horizontally.

use a syringe or do sump. how much hare you over ?

Hi Iceman,
I have no idea. I just put in some oil and only checked the next day after a short drive. I then found the dip stick level over the full mark. I would guess a half litre or so.

I did something similar on my 964, bought one of these from Harbor Freight. Worked great.

I would not worry about half a liter over, myself, on any of my cars. I think the oil volume in these 911s will expand about that much just based on operating temperature.

I have never tried something like this, but if I needed to pull a drain plug in a controlled manner, I might try it. I'll do it on my next 911 oil change to test it out.

yeah half a litre i wouldn't sweat.. if you just drive normally it will be fine .. if you drive like you are on a track and try to pull high G cornering you will see massive plumes of smoke come out of your exhaust.

This is not overfilling like a traditional engine where you would cavitate the oil in the crankcase, this is a dry sump system which means oil is constantly being pumped out. If its grossly overfill some oil from the tank will spill out the breather into the intake and this is what causes massive smoke release. If you are not seeing that don't sweat it at .5 litre.
