Default '89 Targa on BaT

Did you guys happen to see this one? https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...rera-targa-21/

Great presentation and beautiful Targa, but bid to $90k with 4 days to go? Am I missing something here? I mean, there's a 28k '89 Speedster that only has 3 days to on the auction that hasn't hit $90k yet. I'm all for big numbers on low-mile 3.2's, since I've got a 45k car, but this just doesn't seem kosher to me. I'm sure a G50 car is worth a premium, as is an '89, but I know the premium isn't $40k!

Does not compute. at all.

I know coupes that are lower miles and nicer than this that traded less.

Maybe I should have sold my old '89 on BAT! :-)

I’m one of the bidders. From a functional perspective, I prefer a Targa over a Speedster. In terms of trannies, I actually prefer the lighter/livelier feel of a properly setup 915 G-series. But this one seems to be in top notch condition in the color combo that resonates with me. Each G-series variation has its attributes but condition in right color is the strong pull for me on this one.

My next 3.2 would be my 5th. It’s the 911 series I’ve owned the most. I somehow go back to it in between newer 911s and other Porsches. In the world of digital cars, a 3.2 is refreshing and fun to drive. The analog, straightforward driving experience is arguably up there relative to other 6-digit value cars.

EDIT: By the way, I’ve had mostly coupes. But my first 911 was a 72 Targa. After a long hiatus, I’ve recently re-discovered the joys of Targa driving.

I believe all BaT bids are in US dollars, but I'll confirm. Anything otherwise seems like it would lead to much confusion. The other oddity is that the prior bid was I believe $69,500, and why would anyone jump the bidding by $20k+?

I'm very confused by this as well. It does look like a great example but that is Turbo price territory.

This auction ended, and the buyer posted a very logical explanation for jumping the bidding to $90k, and ultimately it ended at $101k. Truly amazing result and if you view it in the "go find another one" terms it makes sense. You don't see many original 42k Carrera 3.2's, you don't see many black/black Targas with sport seats, and you don't see many '89's. Boil it down and this car was a bit of a unicorn, and it had what was possibly one of the best BaT presentations I've seen. I really hope the car is as nice as it appears, and all of us 3.2 Targa owners can be thankful that there were at least a couple of buyers who were willing to pay up for a great car.

I mean hey, if you’ve got the cash then why not?!

I have been to many auctions...... It only takes one or two interested parties and you end up with what happened here. I always say...... It's worth what someone is willing to pay. If your just offering comments then you
don't understand the process.

There is some logic to it and in some cases there is none........ There have been a number of cars, I have seen sold, at numbers that left me scratching my head.
I'm not saying this was one of those cases. It seems the buyer knew what he was doing.

Not sure about the final price (especially for a Targa), but that is an exceptionally clean example of a Carrera 3.2. --Dave
