What are good budget performance tires for my '87 Targa?
Looking to replace all four tires in stock 205/55-16 and 225-50-16 sizes. Don't feel like spending a ton for Pilot Sports and the like. Anyone have good luck with Kumho's or Yoko AVS ES100s, Dunlop FM901s, Pirelli P6000 or other tires in the sub-$100 price range? What do you guys recommend? Appreciate the input.

I just bought Kuhmo Ecsta MX for my 993 (don't know if they make your size) and they are great and cheap

Hopefully this won't sound too cheap, but take a look at Visa brand (distributed by Falken I believe).

For my 83SC I drive it to work about 3 days a week. Needed new tires but didn't want to spend a lot of money at this time. Not into auto x or DE's yet, so these tires fit what I need at this time. No problems for the first 2k miles. Handles well, grip is good with turns, braking is good too (although I probably don't drive as hard as others may). No complaints at this time with performance and didn't break my budget. Had my local America's Tire Co in Fountain Valley, CA put them on (they had them in their local warehouse)for about $300.
Check them out.
Take care!

I have Bridgestone SO3's on my '87. They ride like slippers; v.quiet. Excellent in the wet too. Good wear rate also.
Not sure of the cost in the US but if under US$100 that would be amazing as they are NZD$4-500 a piece in New Zealand.

Has anyone tried the Kumho ECSTA Supra 712s on a Porsche?
These are by far the cheapest tires for my car at Tirerack. I did a search of Porsche owner reviews on the Tirerack site and the reviews are mixed. Some folks swear by them while others don't like them at all. I'd interested to hear your experience if you've tried them. Can't beat the price: $62 for fronts and $66 for rears!!

I also have Bridgestone SO3's on my 911 and I LOVE THEM! I use them on the track to and they are the best street tires I have ever had on the track. They are also amazing in the rain as well. Best wishes - Jay Gratton

I ride on SP8000. They are not the best grip in the turns. They are very good treadwear and well balanced. I wouldn't use them on the track but I rarely take my 911 to the track anyway. The SP8000 are exponentially better (IMO) than any 7000 series Perelli. I hear the Michelin Pilot or Bridgestone SO2 are better grip but very low treadwear. It has a lot to do with how you want to drive.

I love the Yoko AVS EA100. On my second set, and ordering a third set today for a new set of wheels. Absolutely great tire for the price. I think they're $82 and $83 at Tire Rack.

John, in decending order:
1. Kuhmo Ecsta MX
2. Yoko ES100
3. Dunlop SP Sport FM901
The Kuhmo's seem to give the SO3's a run for their money and are FAR less expensive. The ES100's seem to have more favorable reviews than the Sports and the Dunlops are too new to tell, but seem to have a great tread pattern.

Thanks for the input so far. Couple of folks here like the Yoko ES100. How's the grip on dry pavement compared to more expensive tires? That's what I really care about since I don't normally drive my Porsches in the rain.
