Question Roll Bar- AutoPower

Does anyone have any opinions about the AutoPower bolt-in roll bar? I have a 86 Cab that I'm look to track this summer. I'm interested in a bolt in roll bar that I can take in and out. Does anyone have this roll bar? Can some one forward me any pictures of the bar installed in a cab? Thanks for the help.

Rick,

Look carefully at where the Autopower bar bolts to. On a 911 coupe, it's got feet that bolt to the floor, which is not a strong area. I recommend that people who install a bar with feet on the floor weld in an "L" shaped plate with the short part welded to the sill and the remainder on the floor. I don't recall where the upper mounting points are. If they are on the wheel wells, I wouldn't touch the bar. The best rear mounting point is on the sills.

Although pricey, I would look at the DAS rollbar (Performance has a better price than direct from Dougherty, and it's even better if bought during one of their 20% off sales). The Cab bar is designed a bit differently than the coupe bar, and having had only coupes, I can't comment on it's Cab-unique features.

I completely agree with Bill, I have an autopower cage in my sc coupe and I'm not realy that happy with it. It does bolt to the floor, which is not that strong, and the fit is just ok.(it hits the dash) That wont realy be a problem with just a rollbar however. Mine is a bolt-in but I cant imagine taking it in and out of the car too often, mine has never been out.
Good luck,
Mike

Hey Rick!

I have an 86' Cab and I purchased the Das rollbar
from Daugherty direct. Then Performance began
carrying them and they offer a 20% discount sometimes. Anyway, go to the link below and look
up Huey581 by the year and click on my pictures I have there. The last picture is my car with the roll bar. Click on the picture and it will enlarge to fill the whole screen to give you a good look at the bar.

The bar comes not painted and is a bit pricy. It is the slickest thing though. No holes to drill. It lines up and mounts at four points in your car where the seat belt anchors are. The bar also meets PCA/SCCA standards for your drivers ed events. Easy install, easy removal!

The guys at Daugherty Automotive will also answer any questions you have. They have been in Porsche racing for many years and desighned the bar 10 years ago.

Good luck!

i recently installed an autopower roll bar in my '73 911 coupe. i had the shop weld all the places where the bar had used bolts, i had it welded in place on the floor board and rear wheel wells, and i had a cross member welded in place for additional lateral support as well as a correct place to mount harnesses.

all told, i probably spent more modifying the bar than i would have buying another brand bar. i started out liking the cost of the autopower bar, but ended up supplementing it for safety's sake and turning it into a different bar all together.

i'm happy with how it turned out, but it ended up not being as cheap as i had originally hoped. then again, i believe it is wrong to be cheap with safety equipment.

I recently installed the DAS bar (www.das-sport.com) in my 98' Cab. The bar cost about $900 with the optional harness loops and universal camera mount. The bar arrives unpainted so I had a local shop powder coat it satin black for $75. It is one-piece, completely welded (no bolt-together pieces) and weighs approx. 50lbs. Very solid.
Installation was a snap. The two rear mounts bolt directly to the rear seatbelt mounting points. The two fron mounts require six holes (3 per side) to be drilled in the floorpan behind the fron seats. There are two substantial backing plates that mount under the car. Total installation time was about 1 hour and was easily managed by 1 person. Now that the drilling is done, I can remove the bar in about 20 minutes and re-install in about 30.

I lost about an inch of legroom but everything else is perfect. The top function normally and the windscreen remains in place and functional.

I don't know how similar the bar and installation is for an 86, but the DAS guys are a quality operation.

Good luck!

Seems like I saw a DAS rollbar in my local PCA region's classifieds. I checked them a few minutes ago, but it's not in there. Nevertheless, you might look through the various regions' online classifieds, or post a Wanted ad in them.

Good luck!
