Spyder RS driving/ownership impressions
#902
I’ve had my car for a week now (shout out to @bpeacock for helping me get an allocation). Upgraded from a 981 BGTS, and still in break-in. My spec is pretty basic (PDLS, 18-ways, leather/race tex interior, FAL)- I chose not to get Weissach b/c I really didn’t want alcantara on the dash. Impressions so far (all imo and ymmv):
All photos taken by my insanely talented photographer friend. You can find him on Instagram here.
- The suspension feels softer but not less precise than my 981, which had the X73 option. The X73 felt like it delivers more thumps into the cabin while the SRS suspension still conveys what’s happening but feels just a bit more insulated
- The top is a non-issue, specially once you have used it a few times. Taking it down is a bit harder than putting it up. It reminds me of my Brompton for some reason, and I suspect it gets a lot easier with practice and will soon just become muscle memory. Above 80 mph there’s a fair amount of wind noise, and I’ve already tested it to 100 mph (in Mexico)
- Shout out to folks who pointed out that the roof tabs have a tendency to fly off into the bodywork. Mine fell into the seat area, and I epoxied it after that using JB Weld per forum recommendations.
- In the flesh the car looks phenomenal. I was a little worried that I would miss the more classical, organic design of the 981, but I really don’t. It’s a nice balance b/w menace and elegance with all the aero bits
- Below 5k it’s a lot quieter than my old GTS. I am surprised people feel the noise is too much. Will wait for break-in to be complete to evaluate if this is a better road trip car than the GTS.
- Exhaust is pretty muted, intake noise kicks in around 3100-3500 rpm. The engine seems to rev much faster beyond 5k
- Putting the suspension in sport seems to do v little compared to the Sport button on the GTS. Tbh I can’t really tell the difference-have not been on super rough roads, but have used it on a mix of smooth and slightly broken tarmac
- Stock ground clearance seems pretty high. A porsche tech told me they have been seeing a bunch of GT cars ship with wrong ride heights, and I may have this checked out. It’s higher than the GTS and I have no trouble clearing my driveway without FAL where I needed to be a bit more careful in the GTS.
- Cabin seems to run hot-curious if other people feel this too with a lot more heat coming through the seat or bulkhead
- Steering feels much sharper with a lot less slack than the 981
- My first GT car and def sounds a lot lumpier and truck-like at idle, but cleans up nicely as the revs pick up . It idles a little unevenly between 850-900 rpm
- May add some carbon bits to the car (intakes, louvres, naca ducts), but will prob live with it a bit first. Have others made these mods?
- Overall, it’s an easy car to bond with, even during break-in, and retains the mid-engine precision and friendliness of its lineage. Can't wait to rev to 9k

The 992 GT3 is a remarkable piece of engineering. The steering and emotional connection ruins you for all other cars.
But I am going to try to get the SRS to be closer. I think it will be amazing with some weight savings, new exhaust, valve controller, throttle remapping, steering remapping, and maybe some alignment considerations. I need to get this car sharper, more raw, and with more feedback.

I am going against consensus. The SRS is no way above the GT3, nor is it a GT3 replacement. Not even close. But it is a unique and quirky car in it's own right.

Street and backroads = SRS ( Sound is unique, suspension is great, roof or no roof option, lovely size, design, analog) only can be better if there will be a manual option. However this PDK is sharper/faster compared to the GT3 one.
Track = GT3
992 GT3 steering is in other league, but suspension is stiff for street use and I had 991.2 GT3 and 981 GT4 before.

I need to see about the PIWIS GT3 steering programming. I think it will be an improvement for the purpose this car will serve.
